Sea Pak Maryland Style Crab Cakes Review

Crab Cakes, Maryland, St. Simons Island

Sea Pak Shrimp Company’s Maryland Style Crab Cakes are expensive, but are the worth it?

As a native Marylander, I love a good crab cake. But living in Florida now, it’s not easy to find restaurants that serve Maryland style crab cakes. I wondered if the Sea Pak Maryland style crab cakes could even compare to what I’ve had in Maryland.

For my review of the Sea Pak Shrimp Company’s Maryland style crab cakes, I prepared the two crab cakes in different ways. One crab cake I baked; the other one I fried in butter in a non-stick pan.

Here’s what I can tell you about the Sea Pak Shrimp Company’s Maryland Style Crab Cakes based on my review:

No. 1: One crab cake and one ounce of their provided Aioli sauce contains 240 calories and 13 grams of fat. If you fry it in butter, the fat and calories naturally shoots up. From my review, I can tell you the baked one was delicious, but did not have the same crispy, buttery flavor as the one I fried in butter on the stove. Make your own choice depending on your fat and calorie needs, but take comfort in the fact that a moderate-fat diet may be better for dieters anyway.

No. 2: One crab cake contains 1 gram of fiber and 3 grams of sugar and 11 grams of protein. It also contains 50 percent of the Vitamin A, 15 percent Vitamin C, 8 percent calcium and 8 percent iron recommended for the day.

No. 3: The first ingredient is crabmeat. Other ingredients include red bell pepper, mustard, mayonnaise, sugar, salt, wheat flour, spices.

No. 4: I’m disappointed to see the Sea Pak Maryland style crab cakes labeled as a “Product of Thailand.” Evidently it’s distributed by Seapak Shrimp Company based on St. Simons Island in Georgia. Although I love the taste, I’m extremely disappointed the crab does not appear to be blue crab from the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland. Although purchasing the product does support a Georgia distribution company, it’s not supporting Maryland crabbing.

No. 5: They claim to use Maryland style seasoning. The preferred seasoning for crabs in Maryland is Old Bay seasoning, which is not specifically listed on the package of Sea Pack crab cakes.

Bottom line: The Sea Pak Maryland style crab cakes are delicious if you can’t get the real thing. They aren’t authentic Maryland crab cakes, but they do a good job mimicking the flavor and texture with mostly crab and little binder.

It is not spicy, and could use a few shakes of Old Bay seasoning on top, but it’s worth the price tag if you can’t find Maryland blue crab. If you are living in Maryland, don’t even bother with this product!
