Natural Hairstyles, Spring 2012, Summer Hair Styles

The ponytail is the quick go-to hairstyle when women are pressed for time, working out, or if they are having a bad hair day. However, the ponytail has a place outside of the gym and bad hair days. This hairstyle can be worn in various ways from the casual style most wear to more sophisticated and fun varieties. For spring 2012, the ponytail in all its forms is one of major hair trends of the season. Check out four ponytail styles that will make waves this spring.

Smooth and Sleek Ponytail

This ponytail looks simple. However, it takes some work to achieve. Before you gather your hair into the ponytail, it needs to be smooth, sleek and straight.

  1. Shampoo and condition hair as normal.
  2. On damp hair apply a frizz fighter like PHYTO Phytodefrisant, Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm and leave for 10 minutes.
  3. Blow dry hair straight in small sections using a low heat setting.
  4. Brush hair back, smoothing it into a ponytail.
  5. If needed, apply a smoothing serum like Matrix Biolage Smoothing Serum, to the tail.

Wet and Wavy Ponytail

Wet, glistening hair was a huge trend on the spring runways. It is a major component to the athletic trend seen in many designer collections coming from New York. The wet, fresh-from-the-shower look is the main component for the spring 2012’s athletic look. The wet and wavy ponytail is the perfect way to nail this hair trend.

  1. Shampoo and condition hair.
  2. Wring hair dry and blot with a towel.
  3. Apply a curling gel or mousse to hair like Pantene Pro-V Curly Hair Style Mousse, Curls Definition and scrunch hair to form waves.
  4. Let hair air dry.
  5. Once dry, apply a gloss serum for shine.
  6. Pull hair back and gather into a ponytail.

Spray-Painted Ponytail

One major beauty trend for spring 2012 is the spray-painted hair look. A stunning look seen at the Narciso Rodriguez and Issey Miyake spring 2012 runway shows. This graffiti hair color shows color on the top half of the hair only. When the spray-painted hair is pulled back into a ponytail the tail will show a contrast between the spray-painted half and your hair’s normal or current color.

  1. Shampoo, condition and dry hair.
  2. Dry hair as usual.
  3. Put on plastic gloves to protect hands from spray color.
  4. Comb hair back.
  5. Spray temporary hair color over the side and top layer of hair.
  6. Let color dry.
  7. With gloves still on, pull hair back into a ponytail.

Braided Ponytail

Braids are another trend for spring 2012 beauty. Woven hairstyles like cornrows, French braids, fishtails, twists and Dutch braids are woven and twisted together into elaborate styles. If you are not very skilled at braiding, a simple, yet trendy hairstyle to try is to form two braids into one ponytail.

  1. Start with dry hair.
  2. Part hair into two sections.
  3. Secure one section with a hair clip.
  4. Braid the free section in whatever style of braid your choose (French, Dutch, twist, etc).
  5. Secure end of braid with a hair elastic.
  6. Release other section and repeat steps four and five.
  7. Secure both braided tails with a scrunchie or hair elastic.
  8. Remove the elastics securing the braid end and undo the braided tails.
  9. Finger comb ponytail to style.

These four trendy ponytail styles for spring 2012 are not difficult to do. They are in line with the spring beauty and fashion trends. Try one or all of these ponytails out this spring for a new twist to a classic, casual hairstyle.
