Easily Make Your Own Angel or Butterfly Wings

There are many different ways to make angel or butterfly wings for craft projects and there are many different items you can use to create them. Purchase craft items to create the designs or just use things you already have around the house. Either way, your angel or butterfly wings will be fabulous. In addition, the wings are so easy to make you won’t believe you’ve waited this long to try making them.

To make either angel or butterfly wings you’ll need some time of wire to create the shape of the wings. Crafting wire, a pliable clothes hanger, or even pipe cleaners can be used for the wing design. Twist the wire into the desired shapes to create the wings you want. If you’re aren’t so great with shaping wire into wings, try using a coloring book or other pattern. Lay the wire on the book and shape it like the image on the page. Or, use a statuette, if you have one, and twist the wire into the desired shape. Create simplistic shapes or more complex designs.

After you’ve formed the wing shapes you have many choices for wing material. Pantyhose in white, black, pink or other colors make great wings. You can also use lace, satin, and even bridal veil fabrics. Purchase sequined or beaded fabrics that sparkle or use simple fabrics and add your own glittery embellishments. Since it takes only a small piece of fabric to make most wing sets more expensive fabrics can be considered.

Use spray adhesive on the wire shape to attach the wing material. Lay the material out on plastic, to keep it from sticking to other surfaces, and place the wire adhesive side down, onto the fabric. If the fabric is thin, like pantyhose, immediately begin scooting the fabric, with wire, around on the surface to prevent it from sticking. The fabric should be larger than the wing shapes and trimmed after glue is dry.

Be resourceful if you don’t have specific wing fabric. Cut a piece from an old lace curtain, a sheet, or even an old article of clothing. After embellishing the cloth no one will ever know! If purchasing new fabric a quarter of a yard will make many wings.

If the fabric you are using stretches easily you’ll be able to get the wings tighter if you stretch it somewhat. Lay heavy items around the perimeter of the cloth, to hold it in place, then attach the wire and let it dry.

If you’re making several angels and/or butterflies it’s best to stretch a large piece of fabric, attach many wire wing shapes, then cut them out individually. The cloth is much easier to get taut if it’s in large pieces rather than wing size pieces.

Any number of things can be used to embellish the wings including feathers, sequin, tiny beads, glitter paint, glitter glue, faux jewels, colored sand, colored or plain salt, and even paint markers. You’ll find all sorts of supplies at a nearby craft store. Wire in various gauges can be purchased in an assortment of colors.

You won’t believe how easy it is to make the angel and butterfly wings for your future craft projects. You’ll never again pay for expensive craft wings when you can make even lovelier ones on your own!
