Is your little girl having a pajama party? Does she have a birthday coming up and you’ll soon have a houseful of excited girls that need something to keep them busy? Whether you have one girl in the house, or many, they’ll have fun making cool choker necklaces they’ll be proud to wear! You won’t have to produce tons of expensive craft supplies to let them make their own jewelry; a few cheap materials can produce a huge variety of chokers.
Choker necklaces are one of the few necklaces that are easy and impressive. Many necklaces that young girls can make by themselves end up looking like what they are – cheap. But, when a girl makes one of a number of choker style necklaces it can look like much more than a trinket. There are different ways to make the chokers depending upon the supplies you have on hand.
A simple strip of black felt can start the ball rolling when it comes to making chokers. Cut the strip to go around the neck with a couple of inches to spare. Cut the strip to be two to three inches wide. Attach a piece of Velcro to each end of the felt to use as a closure. Now the girl can decide how she wants to decorate the choker. Glue a single fake jewel to the very front, center or glue them all the way around, leaving a space between each one. The peel-n-stick fake jewels work well for girls too young to use a hot glue gun. Instead of hot glue, though, you can use any number of adhesives that offer no risk of being burned.
Instead of fake jewels a girl can make a nice choker by gluing on decorative buttons. Other things that can be used include sequin, foam shapes, shaped erasers, bows, small shells, tiny artificial flowers, flat wooden shapes, and even pom-poms. You’ll find zillions of little miniature pieces that will look great when you browse a nearby craft store.
Although felt makes a nice choker you’ll be even more impressed with the finished necklace if you start with strips of velvet instead. A quarter-yard of the material will make many chokers so you won’t have a large investment. Some fabric stores will sell even an eighth of a yard so you’ll be able to purchase a couple different colors for little money.
Instead of using felt or velvet you can simply braid cord to make chokers. Soft cord, that’s small in diameter, works well. Simply braid enough to wrap around the neck with a couple of inches to spare. At each end of the braid tie it off with a piece of thread. Trim away any excess cord and attach the Velcro pieces as a closure.
You don’t have to have a huge budget to entertain girls at a birthday party or pajama party. They’ll absolutely love the new chokers and they’ll have a lot of fun while making them. The only thing you’ll have to worry about is whether or not you have enough materials; once they make the first choker they’ll definitely want to make another and another!
