Rubber Stamping on Salt Dough Ornaments, Jewelry, and More

Salt Dough

Needed:
1 cup flour
1 cup salt
Warm water
Food coloring or paint (optional)
Toothpick, straw, or nail

Salt dough isn’t all that sophisticated. You mix it up and it can be molded into any shape that you want. Often used to make ornaments, salt dough shapes can also be jewelry, zipper pulls, curtain tie-backs, and many other things. But the best you can do with salt dough is to flatten it, use a cookie cutter to shape it, and then make what you want with it. To do something much more sophisticated, though, try rubber stamps on salt dough. Don’t have any rubber stamps? You can still transfer images to make beautiful personal and home accents for yourself, your family, and your home.

The basic mix for the salt dough is done by pouring a cup of flour and a cup of salt into a bowl. Stir in warm water, and mix, until you have a type of material that’s similar to play dough. If you want the dough to be a specific color stir in a couple of drops of food coloring. Otherwise, you can later paint the jewelry, ornament, or other piece.

You can still use cookie cutters to make the shapes that you want; just roll the dough out to be about a quarter-inch thick. Alternatively, you can use a paring knife, or even a toothpick, to cut out the chosen shape. Press the image of a rubber stamp onto the shape to create the picture that you like.

Besides using a rubber stamp you can make an image by using carbon paper. Lay the paper right side-down on the salt dough, and write on the side that faces up. To prevent poking the writing implement through the carbon paper, lay another paper on top of it. Write on the top paper to create a book excerpt, song lyric, or loving message.

There are many common things that can be used to stamp an image into a salt dough shape. Tiny twigs, a zipper, a raised logo, a wooden shape, or even a small toy, can be used to create an image or picture on the salt dough shape. Don’t forget to poke a hole in the shape if it will be used as an ornament, jewelry piece, or other hanging piece. The hole can be made with a straw, toothpick, or nail.

Put the salt dough on a piece of foil and set it on a baking pan. Set the oven at 200 degrees and let the dough dry out for a couple of hours. When it’s cooled, you can paint it (if you didn’t already dye it), and make the jewelry, ornament, or other accent that you’d like to have.
