Kindergarten Show & Tell

Friday was always a fun day, more fun than any other day at school. Looking forward to Friday would give the students a chance to release some energy that they have been building up all week, as Friday is the last day of the week and most kids have something fun that they want to do over the weekend, hopefully they are able to release some of that pent up energy, and do something fun.

Show & Tell

Friday at school means Show & Tell day, it is predestined that there was going to be some interesting things to see and stories to hear. Mind you this is Kindergarten and there is much inquiring with a lot of appropriate questions to ask by the teacher and the students. Interestingly enough a fun story to tell is that they are going to Disneyland, and then the next 2 or 3 kids come up and say the same thing, until I have to redirect their thought pattern. Show & tell starts after Bible memory and the students do so well with their memory verse that they have a package of ‘Smarties‘,( sweet tarts), to chew on while show & tell is in progress. I always use ‘Smarties‘, for bribes, I mean rewards, because my class is so smart.

Show & Tell Art

Show & tell helps the students learn to be good listeners, and to be respectful when someone else has the floor. I always encouraged them to bring something that they have made for art so we can learn how they made it so uniquely. They are always giving me beautiful pictures that they have colored so I keep these on hand in case they forget to bring something to share, like a new toy. A lot of the time they bring things to school that they have made, either a cute drawing of all the family or one of themselves playing on the playground.

Things from home to share

Warn the parents ahead of time as what is appropriate to bring in to share. The things that are brought in should be something that the kids will let the other students touch, if not, later put it up and out of sight. As the students tell about their treasure have them walk around the class with it in a big circle, to allow the other students to get a close up of the item. Look with your eyes! During free time they get to share, and play with the things that they have brought in for show & tell.

Friday Show & Tell day is also a good day if a student wants to bring in a pet. This should only be allowed if the parent can stay and help to manage the animal and to answer questions. It should be something very gentle and not scary. It is also very important that the animal be taken when the parent leaves after a short visit. I once had a student’s mother bring in a new puppy. She told us that the puppy was from a litter of the Charmin (tissue paper) dog. It was a beautiful golden retriever, so soft and cuddly.

Appropriate questions:

What is it?

Where did you get it?

What is its name? (Stuffed animal or doll)

How does it work?

Where do you keep it?

A couple of questions from the students:

Do you sleep with it?

Does it talk?

I have one of those! (Umm, not a question, Charlie)!
