Trip to the Vermillion County Fair

The first stop on this trip is the horse barn, this is my husband and I’s favorite area, we love to look at the beautiful horse, all in their fair finest. On display was four Thoroughbreds, one Pinto, two Miniature Horses, and a few other breeds as well. All of the horse were standing at the front of their stalls, so we could get a good look at them.

We are now walking through the big show arena, were they are just finishing up the swine show. It has always amazed me how the littlest 4-Her can lead their pig almost anywhere they want them. Since the were done with the showing, we walked around the outside of the pig barn, as to not get in the way. They photo above shows one of the pigs that was just shown this evening.

Next my family and I walked through the Dairy Barn, which has sheep, goats, and cattle in it, our fairs are small, and there hasn’t been many cattle entry’s in the last few years, so they decided, a few years ago, to house them in the same barn. As we are viewing the sheep, and goats there are probably 50 on exhibit, with four to each pen. These haven’t been judged yet for they will be doing this on June 24,2009, their should be many champions in this area of the barn. Now we are walking through the cattle area of the dairy barn, there are not as many as there were when I was in 4-H, we had two barns full of cattle, I counted only 8 cows, for the showing in the evening on June 24,2009. The ones that really stood out to me were the four Black Angus, cattle, they were very stout and clean. Of course I am not a cattle judge, just watched them when I was a 4-Her years ago, when all of my friends showed them. So as I watch them I did pick up a few pointers along the way.

Now on our Vermillion County Fair tour, we will be visiting the rabbit and poultry barn, again this use to be full when I was in 4-H, this year there is just one row of rabbits, and poultry. My son was happy to see the mommy white bunny with her two little babies. There was 30 rabbits on exhibit, and these were all one rabbit to a cage. There was 15 Chickens/Roosters, and 4 ducks, these were very nice to look at since I live right behind the fair grounds and can here the Roosters crowing all day long.

We will now be going through the 4-H project building, this is where the gardening, clothing, environments, electricity, photography, and more. There was even a new project group that wasn’t their when I was in 4-H, it was called Construction. This is where they build things with Lego’s. Lincoln Logs, and any type of constructor sets, to build wonderful models. One of the 4-Her’s build using Lego’s, the Star Wars Death Star, which was very impressive. Others used Lincoln Logs, to build forts, and barns as their displays. This must have taken the place of the Models (cars) that I use to do as a 4-Her. The tomatoes and floral displays were very good, considering it is the last week of June. I was very impressed with the basketry exhibits, someone had made a shelving unit that looked like something you would get at one of those high end type of stores. It is amazing what the youth of our county can do when given the opportunities. Also in this building was the photo of this years Vermillion County Fair Queen, Kelly Y, she lives here in Cayuga, Indiana. The Queen Contest was held on June 13, at our North Vermillion High School, there was only 8 contestants. She will be proudly representing Vermillion County, at the Indiana State fair in Indianapolis, Indiana in August of this year.

We are now walking through the midway, where all of the games and rides are, we saw kids riding on the carousel, the little motorcycles, cars, and sliding down the big slide just to name a few of the carnival rides. It was a humid night so that was the coolest part of the park to stand in with all of the air from the rides. My son is still to scared to ride on these, at least this year the sounds of the rides didn’t send him running away like last year. We also walked right passed all of the fair food vendors, oh the smells of the corn dogs, elephant ears, and cotton candy is enough to make you want to forget about those summer diet plans.

Well I hope you enjoyed our little tour through the Vermillion County Fair, we also have a open exhibit building, but it was getting late and they were closing the doors. It is sad to see how little involvement in the 4-H these days. To me that tells me that there are not as many family farms left in this area, and that is just sad, for us all. Well if you are ever in Indiana next year, why not come and visit a small little town in Vermillion County, that goes by the name of Cayuga, and visit our little county fair.
