Select Comfort’s Sleep Number Bed: Model 5000 Works Great

Select Comfort, Sleep Number Bed

You may have seen the numerous TV commercials or QVC specials on the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort and thought to yourself, “Does it really make that much of a difference in your sleep quality?” The answer is a resounding “YES!” The Sleep Number Bed is steadily gaining more popularity, and is now being featured at several Radisson properties and is also the official bed provider for the Ronald McDonald House.

My husband and I own a Sleep Number Bed, Model 5000, and have been sleeping comfortably on it for more than a year. It initially was a birthday present for me from my husband because I was about 7 months pregnant and having a difficult time getting comfortable in our king-sized spring mattress bed. Personally, I think it was more of a gift for my husband himself, as he was constantly tossing and turning at night and waking up with an aching back. In fact, some nights he preferred to sleep on the floor, as our bed proved to be too soft for him. Also, if I or my husband adjusts our sleeping position during the night, there is no transference of movement, meaning we cannot feel the other person moving around. Overall, the Sleep Number Bed changed our sleepless, achy nights significantly for the better.

Additionally, the mattress is so light that making the bed and changing the sheets is incredibly easy. Also, if you live in a home where you have tight hallways, you don’t need to worry how you will get the mattress to fit into your room. The Sleep Number comes in two boxes, which are actually quite small and light and can be brought straight into the room where the bed will be installed.

The 5000 Model

The model we own, the 5000, is the most popular model offered by Select Comfort. It features a plush 11-inch mattress, which includes a 2 inch European style pillow top. The king sized bed we own has two air chambers, one for each side of the bed. The air chambers are filled and adjusted through a Sleep Number Firmness Control System, which is virtually silent during operation. Power is only used when making adjustment, so if your power goes out the mattress remains inflated at your set level. The 5000 model features a wireless remote with a backlit digital display and shows you the “sleep number” on which your mattress, or side of the mattress, is currently set at. Adjustments can be made to either side of the mattress with this one remote. It feels like a regular mattress, but it truly gives you the control you need to specify the firmness or softness you need for any given circumstance. For example, when pregnant my optimal number was 55, and now that I am no longer pregnant I sleep on level 75. My husband likes his side to be much firmer, so he hovers around 90-95, depending on how his back is feeling prior to going to sleep.

Other Available Models

Select Comfort carries four other models of the Sleep Number Bed. The 3000 and 4000 are the base models, while the 7000 and 9000 are their deluxe models. The basic differences in the models are mattress thickness and quality, and firmness control.

The 3000 model has a 9 inch plush-top style mattress, while the 4000 model has a 10 inch European-style pillow top mattress. For both base models a 110V, 60 Watt, dual fan forced air pump fills and adjusts the firmness of the air chambers. The 3000 model comes with a non-digital wired remote which basically adjusts the firmness up or down, but does not give you a number reading. The single wired digital remote comes as an upgrade option on the 3000 model and it comes standard with the 4000 model.

The deluxe models feature duvet-style pillow tops which are over 2 inches thick. The 7000 model’s total mattress thickness is 12 inches, while the 9000 model has a total thickness of 13 inches. Like the 5000 model, the 7000 and 9000 have a silent Sleep Number Firmness Control System. They, too, feature a wireless remote with a backlit digital display. However, the deluxe models have additional remote features. These include: a Full-fill feature, where with the press of one button you can inflate the mattress to it’s maximum, which is useful for making the bed; a Sleep Number memory setting, where with the push of one button your mattress will return to your pre-programmed memory number; and a real-time Sleep Number display, which shows the actual number your bed is at, changing with your changes in position.

Cost

All models come in several sizes of mattress, ranging from twin/extra-long twin to California king. The cost is relative to the style, size, and remote features.

3000 Model: Starts at $400 (mattress) and $650 (mattress & box-spring set) for twin size to $900/$1500 (mattress/set) for the king/California king.

4000 Model: Starts at $900 /$1150 for twin, to $1600/$2200 for king/California king.

5000 Model: Starts at $1200/$1450 for twin, to $2000/$2600 for king and California king.

7000 Model: Starts at $2300/$2600 for twin extra-long, to $3100/$3700 for king/California king.

9000 Model: Starts at $3200/$3500 for twin extra-long, to $4100/$4700 for king/California king.

These prices are slightly higher than the top-of-the-line brand name spring mattress sets. However, you should consider that a spring mattress generally only lasts 8-10 years, and that the Sleep Number Bed is under warranty for 20 years. Many of the customer testimonials on the Select Comfort website are even from consumers who have had their beds for over 20 years.
