Your wedding is supposed to be the most beautiful day of your life, but of course things don’t always go as planned. From movies about unexpected love, wacky in-laws, matchmakers, wedding crashers, and wedding singers, this is a list of some of the best movies about weddings that will help you get ready for your big day. My Big Fat Greek Wedding – “Fat” isn’t usually a word that a bride likes to hear anywhere close to the word “wedding”, but this romantic comedy is definitely a must-see for a bride who is upsetting her family by going against tradition.
The Wedding Singer – Adam Sandler shifts the wedding focus from the wedding party to the wedding singer. The result? One of the most beloved movies of the 90’s that might have you looking at your wedding singer in a different way (although hopefully not).
My Best Friend’s Wedding – Cameron Diaz + Julia Roberts + dark and handsome guys = one great wedding movie. Hopefully you haven’t let your best friend get away and are walking down the aisle with him!
The Wedding Dress – This romantic film is about how one wedding dress changes the lives of six different brides. It’s kind of like ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’, but with a wedding dress. Neil Patrick Harris of HIMYM stars in it and shows his more serious side.
Runaway Bride – Julia Roberts is the undisputed queen of romantic comedies; put her in one, and you’re sure to have a hit. Make the movie about a wedding, and you’ve hit a home run. Maybe living vicariously through Julia Roberts will save you from being a runaway bride.
Father of the Bride (1950) – Spencer Tracy plays daddy to one of the most beautiful brides of all time, Elizabeth Taylor, in this classic romantic comedy.
Father of the Bride (1991) – Comedian Steve Martin modernizes the classic film with an over-the-top wedding planner, but still faces the same problem of not being able to let his little girl go.
Monsoon Wedding – This is one of the better movies about a wedding that you will see. It’s a beautiful film about the morphing relationships surrounding the arranged marriage of a young Indian woman, and it’s a wonderful look at weddings in another culture.
The Princess Bride – Doesn’t every girl dream of being a princess marrying her prince charming on her wedding day? Well, hopefully you’re not being forced to marry a short, evil prince with a funny name and waiting to be rescued by your witty prince charming, but a girl can dream, right?
Meet the Fockers – This crazy follow-up to ‘Meet the Parents’ might make you feel a little better about all of your in-laws being in one room together.
The Philadelphia Story – This is one of the best romantic comedies starring Katherine Hepburn. It’s a great film about those giving their love a second chance, as it’s ultimately about a couple who can’t seem to let each other go.
Muriel’s Wedding – Poor Muriel! She lives in a fantasy world filled with ABBA music, but longs for her dream of the perfect white wedding to come true. This movie stands out from other romantic comedies involving weddings, due to the palpable sense of doom we feel surrounding Muriel.
Fiddler on the Roof – This movie has one of the best wedding celebration sequences ever, and it will make you glad that you didn’t have to depend on a matchmaker to make you a match.
Moonstruck – Before you marry your husband, make sure he doesn’t have a passionate, one-handed brother.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – This film is most definitely sexist (a group of brothers kidnap a group of girls and keep them locked up over the winter in hopes that they’ll come around and marry them), but somehow it just works. This bizarre love story is full of catchy song-and-dance numbers to distract from its slightly disturbing storyline.
Four Weddings and a Funeral – Hugh Grant was just starting to solidify his career as one of the leading men of romantic comedies when this film came out. He plays a bumbling, awkward guy pursuing the woman he loves through social events like weddings and, of course, a funeral. It’s this oft-revisited character that made him such a loveable icon of romantic movies.
Corpse Bride – This is one of the darkest movies about a wedding you will ever see, but it is also a lot of fun; just warn your husband not to practice his wedding vows with a tree branch.
Wedding Crashers – If your wedding is going to be crashed, wouldn’t you love for Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn to be the guys who do it? This is a great romantic comedy that proves that even the worst of men has a soft spot (so there’s hope for your husband-to-be, after all).
Bride Wars – Are you and your best friend planning on getting married around the same time? Well, you might want to rethink your plans. Perhaps watching Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway face off in a battle of the brides will help keep you from turning into a bridezilla.
American Wedding – Who would have thought that a raunchy teen comedy would have led to wedding movie? But of course Stifler is planning the bachelor party and Jim’s dad has plenty of wedding-day advice for his son, so the juvenile laughs aren’t lacking.
27 Dresses – Celebrate your bridesmaids with this “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” tale. The lesson here? You may have to wear a lot of bridesmaid’s dresses in your life, but you’ll eventually get to don that wedding gown.
The Wedding Planner – If you take away anything from this movie, it’s this: don’t hire someone that looks like Jennifer Lopez to plan your wedding.
The Wedding Date – This movie is why one of your friends might bring a gigolo to your wedding.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry – Well, this movie probably doesn’t apply to your wedding, but it’s still pretty funny.
Bride and Prejudice – Celebrate your wedding Bollywood-style with this flashy, fun flick based on the classic Jane Austen novel.
