Choosing a retirement living plan for yourself or your parents is so important that you really should spend months, even a year or more on making your decision. You will need to search for options in your area, then make calls and finally conduct some lengthy visits. I also suggest meeting some of the residents and talking to them.
You need to choose a community that has a variety of service levels so that if nursing care is required later, you can transition to this with a minimum of disruption.
Memphis, with a population of over a million, is a large sprawling city with an increasing number of new retirement communities all over the area. I have been to many of these personally and can say a bit from my experience and my impressions. I’ve picked out several I know about and will include some general links that will give you a list to peruse.

Kirby Pines is located in a beautiful suburban area at the edge of the city and is one of the most beautifully landscaped communities of its kind I’ve seen. There are beautiful green gardens and tall oaks and elms where residents can take restful walks. From extended care to an Alzheimers unit, there are many options. The nurses I saw were attentive and cheerful. Inside even the Alzheimer’s Unit, people seemed to care and to be very professional. The buildings are light and airy. Even the Alzheimer’s unit has computers with big print screens and there was a birdcage in the main lounge and seemed to be lots of resources for sensory stimulation.
I’d definitely put this facility tops on any list for retirement care in Memphis.
Kirby Pines IS focused more on elderly who have difficulty getting around and like most facilities of this sort, has recreation, meals, laundry rooms and lots of amenities, depending on what you need.
Trezevant Manor is another option for retirement. It is concentrated mostly on those who want some care. They are licensed in all areas and have been around a long time.

Trezevant is a high rise apartment tower at the edge of a mid-town neighborhood of incredible trees and lovely homes. It’s close to several several very nice shopping areas and malls, with fine restaurants and bookstores. The management here is very competent and the place is often a first choice for people who have real extended care needs for their elderly parents. They have suites or rooms available.
The next retirement living accommodation I am familiar with is the Parkview. It is a beautiful building located in beautiful midtown Memphis, overlooking the lush golf course and woods of historic Overton Park. It is an incredibly beautiful building that mimics the Colonial architecture of Great Britain, with its white, elaborate façade and many windows. It’s also within walking distance from the Memphis Zoo, an internationally recognized organization with superb landscaping and restaurants available. Brooks Museum is also right across the street for history buffs and art lovers. There is a beautiful patio restaurant there, too, for times when seniors want to get out and take in the beauty of the dogwoods and magnolias beyond the golf course.
The rooms are lovely and the availability of a huge variety of sizes is very special for this type of accommodation. I have seen one bedroom apartments and very large three bedroom apartments with tall ceilings. This building is around 55 years old and has warm radiator heat and tall, double-hung windows. It may even be on the historic register, but I can’t be sure. The common areas are elegant and give a feeling of going back to a more luxurious time when things were slow and dignified. Under huge, tall ceilings with lovely hardwood and marble floors are a library, a patio, a card-playing area, reading room, and so much more. It’s all so open and the residents seem to enjoy their home immensely. Dining is available around the clock, and there are small tables that actually feel like real dining is taking place. Busses take residents shopping and, I think, to church. Check with the facility directly to see how you can take a tour.
Be aware that there is no adjunct nursing service, so if you intend to need this later you will have to hire an agency yourself and make arrangements when it becomes necessary. The Parkview

Kennington Point is more of a luxury accomodation for retirees and the amenities it offers are vast: fitness room, are and crafts studio, library, cafe market, huge dining room and living room under a vaulted airy atrium ceiling.
Located in East Memphis, it is modeled on the Southern Colonial style and has a gracious, southern living feel to it. The interior courtyard brings more light into the interior. It is operated by Cordia, which also operates two more communities in Memphis the area– Heritage Place and Franklin Park–all upscale, well-managed enterprises. Kennington Point offers various levels of retirement accommodations and services. It’s just a matter of calling them and making an appointment to take a tour and find out costs involved.
