Pier Fishing in Oak Island, North Carolina

Oak Island Pier, Oak Island NC

The pier that never sleeps located in Oak Island NC. We have some dedicated fishermen and women here. The temperature can be 30 degrees but that doesn’t matter if the fish are biting. My neighbor whom lives a few doors down is one of those dedicated fishermen. I can tell you what time he leaves out each morning. He rides by my house around 5:30 with his truck stocked with his fishing poles ready to go. Everyday rain or shine! That also applies for our local surfers. If there are waves you will find them all in wetsuits trying to catch that wave. One of the running jokes in our town is “If the fish are biting and the waves are crashing, no work will get done” and in many cases this is the truth.

Pier fishing on Oak Island NC can get very interesting. It is known for holding North Carolina state record Tiger Shark weighing in at 1150 pounds which was caught in 1966 by Walter Maxwell.

There are many reasons why people choose to fish from the pier. When I took a poll from asking individuals on the pier. The number one reason was due to the fact that they simply did not like being on a boat in the ocean. A few had experienced being out on a boat and had gotten seasick. They said that being seasick was one of the worse sicknesses they had ever experienced. A few could not swim and never get in the water at all. By Oak Island NC having access to a pier gives these people the chance to still experience ocean fishing in their own safe environment.

Others I spoke with said they couldn’t afford the boat or gas to go out to sea. A few of the guys said they own a boat but with the economy the way it is right now they couldn’t afford the gas that it takes to go and do the recreational sport they enjoy. They were very grateful to have the pier here to continue doing what they love.

The Oak Island NC Pier is located on the main strip at 705 Ocean Drive. The pier is open daily with Pier Fishing passes good from 6:00AM to 6:00AM next day
for Bottom Fishing and Daylight till Sunset for King fishing.

There is also a tackle store on location that is wonderful for our visitors that would like to experience fishing from the pier but didn’t want to carry their fishing gear with them or for those that don’t have any fishing gear at all. They have it set up to where you can rent their equipment. This is a wonderful advantage to me because I don’t get to pier fish that much and I haven’t invested the money into all the equipment involved. To be honest I’m not a great pier fisher woman. I tend to just feed them instead of actually catching them.
