Cavachon, a Hybrid Dog Breed: A Guide

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

There’s a growing trend among dog breeders today to cross-breed for temperament, coloring, trainability, size, and even to be hypoallergenic. Labradoodles, puggles, and bullboxers are rising in popularity, as are many other lesser-known hybrid dogs. Among them is the Cavachon, a “designer” cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. When considering these dogs, remember that many of our common, recognized breeds once started in much the same way! The Dog Breed Info Center (2009) recommends that “the best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed.

My research led me to the American Kennel Club website for each of these two breeds to attempt to predict the size, lifespan, and temperament of the Cavachon. The AKC describes the Cavalier as “an elegant, energetic toy breed that is compatible for country or city life” and the Bichon Frise as “small and sturdy with a dark-eyed inquisitive expression and a plumed tail it carries merrily over the back.” Both are petite dogs, measuring anywhere from 10 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing an average of 15 pounds.

Maintenance is very easy with these soft, hair-coated dogs. Moreover, the Cavachon has been shown to be among the better breeds for allergy sufferers! Aside from regular brushing, basic ear and teeth care are recommended, but the Cavachon has not been shown to have any particular breed ailments. Often, mixing breeds like this eliminates common breed defects, one of the positives to owning a hybrid.

Although housebreaking can be a challenge with these dogs, basic training and socialization at an early age will be important. Next Day Pets (2009) recommends crate training and firmness, patience, and consistency. Once adjusted, these dogs are well-suited to apartment life and can be highly active and happy indoors. However, they are also eager to play outside with the family and take leisurely walks regularly!

In terms of temperament, the combination of these dogs is ideal for any family looking to add an intelligent, friendly, and loyal member. The Bichon is gentle and sensitive, but can be playful, energetic and cheerful. Likewise, the Cavalier is known to be outgoing, friendly, and very non-aggressive. Small dogs in general are known for their personal attachment and high level of involvement in every day family life, so be prepared to add a new “child” to your brood. However, the experience can be extremely rewarding as these dogs are among the most affectionate and loving you can find!
