How to Use a Micro SD Card

Firewire, Sd Card

Micro SD cards are smaller versions of standard SD cards. SD cards are used to store a variety of digital media on while being removable and upgradeable. Micro SD cards are simply small versions of the cards designed for use in electronic devices that are growing smaller and smaller. Devices such as phones, digital cameras, and handheld gaming platforms often use the Micro SD format to store data on.

Using these cards is really no different from using standard sized ones when it comes to storing data on them. Many of the micro ones hold just as much as their standard size counterparts and works just as well if not better considering they fit in smaller devices that need storage options.

Retrieving data off a micro SD card is slightly different then retrieval from other media storage options and this is the area in which you’ll need how to use a Micro SD card in particular. Since these cards are smaller, they don’t fit in the standard ports for regular SD cards found on many computers, laptops, printers, and card readers. So small in fact, that many of these cards would get lost or stuck in the standard ports.

Fortunately there is an easy an inexpensive way to move files to and from a Micro SD card directly and some aftermarket micro cards even include an adapter with the product. The adapter is generally a plastic case that looks like and is the same size as a standard card. It usually pops open allowing you to place the micro SD card inside it. The adapter is designed so that the micro card’s contact points connect with the adaptors so that when it is placed in a port, the data can be read.

These adaptors are not SD cards in themselves, rather like a shell of an SD card allowing the smaller card to fit in the standard ports. Some external ports that connect via firewire and USB are also available and often come with various sized ports for different sized SD cards although in most cases the adaptor case is sufficient.

If your computer or printer does not have a port for an SD card you’ll need to get an external port or simply use the USB or Firewire connection available with many cell phones and digital cameras for moving data from the card to the computer without even removing the Micro SD card.

If you are purchasing an SD card (micro or standard) make sure it will fit in the device that you plan on putting it in. A lot of portable technology uses small cards, many which are smaller then your pinky finger thumbnail. These small cards will only fit in devices designed to use them, just as the larger ones will only fit in devices designed to use them.

Using a Micro SD card is easy and half the time the user may not even realize a Micro SD card is at use in their electronic devices. Whether you need to buy one or move data to and from one, the above suggestions should help you and make Micro SD cards an easy part of your digital life.
