How to Stop Cyber Bullying

Cyber Bullying

In an earlier article, the effects of cyber bullying were discussed and how it can be worse than you think. For this article, it will be discussed how to stop cyber bullying. It may just be the internet to some people, but to others, cyber bullying can be a horrible experience. Nobody likes to be bullied, even when they just want to surf the internet and talk to their friends.

While it may or may not take some time and work, it can be stopped. There are tips on how to stop cyber bullying, they are as follows.

Ignore The Bullies.
They say if you ignore someone who is bothering you, they will go away. If someone is trying to pick a fight with you, try to ignore them. While everyone wants to stand their ground, sometimes it is better to ignore someone then to make the problem worse. Fighting back may lead to a whole new incident.

Tell Someone.
Unfortunately, ignoring a person does not always make them go away. If they keep on bothering you, tell someone. First of all, tell the administrator of the site. This way they are aware that a member of their site is harassing another member. You should also tell a relative or friend (or both). Make sure they are aware that there is an issue and that you are being bothered. If someone comes to you and lets you know that they are being cyber bullied, do not ignore it or dismiss it. This can become a very serious issue if it is not stopped.

Use The Block Button.
Another tip on how to stop cyber bullying is to block them. Use the block button and use it well. Block them on sites, emails, messengers, and so on. The less contact they have with you, the less damage they can do. Do not leave them unblocked just to see what they will say yet. This is only inviting them to continue. Block them from having communication with you as best as you can.

Change Emails and Screennames.
Sometimes the cyber bullying can be taken to email and instant messengers. As much as you may not want to, you may have to change your email and screennames online. Then you can give them out to family and friends who you know you can trust. This way, you will not have to worry about receiving any emails or instant messengers from those who are bullying you.

Keep Social Networking Profiles On Private.
If the cyber bullying is happening on a social networking site, remove them from your friends list (if they were on it to begin with) and block them. In addition, keep your social networking on private, so that way only your family and friends can see it. Do not add anyone you do not know or do not trust to your profile.

Report Them To The Authorities.
If the previous tips on how to stop cyber bullying are not successful, or if your bully resorts to threats, then report them to the proper authorities. Nobody wants their bullying to go this far, but you need to take the appropriate actions for the safety of you and your loved ones. Even if this means getting the police involved.
