How to Purchase a Fraternity Jacket

One of the best ways to show off your organization is by wearing a jacket. It’s one of the easiest ways to show just how proud you are of your fraternity or sorority. The colors are striking, and the various information that you find on them tells a lot about you personally. However, purchasing a line jacket can be somewhat complicated if you don’t know what you are doing. They can cost a lot of money, so you really want to make sure that you are doing it right. Here’s some information to help you make your line jacket the best that it can be.

Colors

Make sure that you know the colors of your fraternity when you are ordering your jacket. The obvious colors like red, green, and blue aren’t that hard to pick out, but be sure to check the colors if they are very specific. For example, navy blue and blue are different, and it would be an embarrassment to the organization if you had the wrong colors on your jacket. There’s a difference between gold, athletic gold, and old gold. Make sure that you have the correct color scheme and check with the place you are ordering the jacket from if you have any questions.

Types of Jackets

There are various styles of jackets that you can purchase. Two of the most popular are the pull over and the button up. The pull over has a hood and the letters usually go over the pouch that is in the front. With the button up the letters and other pertinent information goes on the side. Decide which one is best for you.

How much is too much

One of the highlights of line jackets is the information on them. It’s a chance to sport your accomplishments and who you are in the organization. Decide just how much information you want on the jacket before you order it. It can range from just the three letters of your organization, to line name, line theme, number, etc. A lot of people have two line jackets; one with just the letters and another with all the information.

Specifics

When you are getting information placed on your jacket, you need to make sure that everything is in the right place. The rule of thumb is this: the more important the bit of information is, the closer it goes to your heart. That will be explained as we go further on.

The Front

For a button down jacket, if you have just the letters of your organization they go on the left side of your jacket (for pull overs the letters go across the pocket on the bottom as discussed earlier). However, if your organization has a shield or crest, then that usually takes precedence over the letters. The crest would go on the left and the letter on the right.

Left Sleeve

Put the chapter that you are from on your left sleeve.

Right Sleeve

The season you crossed goes on your right sleeve. For example, SP06, FA02, etc.

Back

The back of the jacket is where information such as line names, numbers, crossing line themes are placed. The line name usually goes across the top, the number in the middle, and whatever else under that.
