The width is what matters most. Barbie dolls have tiny waists but the skirt needs to be able to be slipped onto the Barbie doll easily. Velcro can be used in the back as a closure or you can use the elastic thread. Cut the fabric to be two inches wide for at the top. If you want to flare out the bottom of the skirt by increasing the width you can. You will need two like pieces. They should be exactly the same. The bottom of the skirt can be cut at an angle for a funky twist.

Thread your needle with the regular thread in a color that will blend with the fabric you chose. Take the two pieces of fabric and place them one on the other with the pattern sides facing inward. Sew each side of the skirt by folding the two pieces of fabric over by one quarter in an stitching the entire length. Do the same for each side. Double stitch for extra wear ability.

Next go to the bottom of the skirt. Whether it is straight across or cut at an angle it can be trimmed with lace or folded over and stitched. Adding a thin lace is a fun and fancy touch. To sew by folding the fabric simply fold the bottom edge up one quarter an inch and stitch with a matching colored thread.

The last step is the waist of the skirt. Fold the fabric down one half of an inch. Stitch along the bottom of the fold all the way around the entire waist. Use regular thread to do this with. Once done you will have created a pocket for the elastic thread to be put into. To insert the elastic thread cut a very small slit in the pocket. Don’t cut all the way down to your stitch line though. Cut a five inch strand of elastic thread. Tie a good knot in one end of the elastic thread. It should be a knot that has been tied three times and is secure. Slip the knot into the slit of the pocket. Feel for the knot under the fabric and work it through the pocket until it has gone all the way around and has met the slit again. Pull it out of the slit. Tie the two ends of elastic thread together. Turn the skirt right side out and take a look at it. It should look like a beautiful little Barbie doll skirt. The elastic thread in the waistline keeps the waist snug on the Barbie doll but allows for pulling the skirt on and off. Thanks for reading and take care!
