How to Clean a Dryer Vent, Filters and Drum

Much like any other household appliance, a dryer needs proper maintenance. Keeping a dryer clean includes attention to the vent, filters and drum. Add years to dryer life by including cleaning as part of regular maintenance. Clean accidents like melted crayon from the drum promptly to avoid clothing damage. Reduce risk of fire by keeping your dryer vent and filters lint free.

Cleaning dryer filters

Dryer filters should be cleaned after each use. There’s usually a filter just below the dryer opening. Clean it by lifting out the trap and wiping the lint off by hand. While the trap is off, check inside the pocket for lint as well. Also check for lint build up inside the dryer door where the air blows into the filter. Vacuum both areas once monthly.

Cleaning the dryer vent

Cleaning the dryer vent hose is a little more complicated. The hose runs from the dryer to the wall. It may also run inside the wall, depending on the home structure. The dryer vent should be vacuumed monthly to avoid lint buildup. Once every 6 months run a long handled flexible dryer cleaning brush through as well. These are sold at home building supply stores.

Cleaning crayon from the drum

Kids tend to leave strange objects like crayons in their pockets. Melted crayon on a dryer is messy and hazardous. To clean residual crayon run an old towel through the dryer cycle. The crayon will melt and be collected on the towel. This may need to be repeated several times. Clean the residual crayon with a bit of citrus based cleaner on a cloth. Do not apply cleaner directly to dryer drum.

Cleaning ink from the drum

Always clean the dryer drum with non-flammable solutions. Residual flammable solution can cause fires. Rub the dryer drum with a citrus based cleaner dampened cloth. Do not apply the cleaner directly to the dryer drum. Cleaning solutions can work their way into the dryer and damage mechanisms. To make sure the drum is clean, run an old towel through the dryer cycle.

Cleaning soil from the drum

There are times when the dryer is used to dry outdoor clothes after wear. After doing this, always clean the dryer drum before using it again. Plain soap and water works fine for this job. Just dampen a clean cloth in a solution of dish soap and water. Use the damp cloth to wipe the drum clean. Repeat as needed. Rinse with a water dampened cloth.

Cleaning dryer surfaces

The outside of a dryer needs cleaning too. Spills and dust can transfer onto clean clothes. Be sure to clean dryer surfaces weekly or when spills occur. Use a mild all purpose cleaner and paper towels or a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners. They may scratch the dryer surface. Rinse after cleaning for a streak free finish.
