How to Make Thai Fisherman Pants

Thai fisherman pants are very comfy and fun to lounge around in. They take one hour to make and require only basic sewing skills. You can fit two or three people in one pair of pants. They are one size fits all.

What you need:

2 yards cotton or rayon material

Scissors

Thread

Fabric pencil

Tape measure

Sewing machine

8-inch diameter bowl

Measure and Cut Pant Legs

1) Measure your inseam to determine pant length. Measure from your crotch to the floor. If you want shorts or Capri pants, measure to your desired length. Add 10 inches to that measurement.

2) Fold the material in half so that the fold is on the left or right side. Measure and cut a rectangle. Do not cut the fold. The size of the rectangle is 30 inches wide and the length measurement from Step 1.

3) Measure 10 inches down from the top along the left edge. Mark the spot with a fabric pencil. Measure 4 inches down from the 10-inch mark, and then mark 4 inches inside. Place the bowl on the material so that the 10-inch mark and the inside 4-inch mark touch the edge. Draw a line from mark to mark. Do this on the right edge. This creates the inseam of the pants.

4) Mark a straight line all the way down from the end of the curve until you reach the bottom of the pants. Measure the width to make sure it is 22 inches. If not, rework those measurements.

5) Cut out the shape following along the lines you marked. You should have a fat T shape. One side, 10 inches long, is still folded and uncut.

Measure and Cut Top Panel and Sash

1) Fold some of the extra material in half. Cut a 30-inch by 10-inch rectangle along the fold.

2) Measure and cut a 55-inch by 3-inch long strip of material for the sash.

Sew the Pants Together

1) Open the T shape material and connect the two 10-inch ends. Sew up the ends to make a loop. Do the same with the top panel.

2) Line up the right side of the top panel seam with the wrong side of the seam of the pant leg loop. Sew the panel to the pants, sewing completely around the loops. When you turn the material right side out, the top panel is wrong side out.

3) Turn the material so that the sewn seam is in the back and at center. Your massive loop of material should look like pants now. Sew up the inseam in the front and back to complete the legs.

4) Hem the pant legs and the top panel.

5) Fold the sash in half to create a 1 1/2-inch wide strip. Sew along the edge, leaving a 1-inch opening in the center. Turn the strip right side out through the hole.

6) Sew the sash to the back of the pants just above the seam of the legs and the top panel. Sew the sash at the center, closing the opening as you sew.

Wear Your New Thai Fisherman Pants

Pull the pants on, trying not to laugh at how large they are and how funny you look in them. Fold over one side to your opposite hip. Fold the other side on top of the first. You are wrapping the extra material around your front. Bring the sash ends to the front and tie them together to hold the pants up. Fold the top panel down and adjust so that the pants don’t feel funny on your crotch.
