How to Make Your Own Toothpaste: Tooth Whitening Powder and Mouthwash

Natural Toothpaste

You can make your own natural mouth care products at home with a few simple ingredients. The first step, of course, is obtaining these products. I would recommend using a reputable wholesaler online. The one I use has no minimum order, is very reasonably priced, and sells high quality products.

A simple online search using Google or Yahoo will yield a large amount of herbal product wholesalers from which to choose. Since you are buying in bulk, expect to spend around $30 for all your products needed here, however, they will last for a very long time depending on how often you use them. These ingredients can also be used for a number of other remedies and household needs. So don’t think that you will be stuck with large amounts left over that you will never use.

We’ll start with how to prepare your own natural toothpaste:
You will need:
A Jar with an air tight lid (to store your toothpaste once it ready)
A mixing bowl (to mix your ingredients)
4 Drops of clove oil (optional, use for sensitive teeth to relieve pain)
1/4 Cup vegetable glycerin (this is the base. It will also help dilute oils)
1/4 Cup of white cosmetic clay (Clay is slightly abrasive, it will not hurt, and used to remove plaque. )
1/4 Cup of baking soda (Freshen breath, clean mouth, and whiten teeth)
1/8 Cup sea salt, fine grain (Sea salt contains many minerals that will help tighten and strengthen your gums.)
6 Drops of essential peppermint oil (for flavoring)

In your mixing bowl, Mix all ingredients together. Make sure it is completely blended to a very smooth consistency. If you have trouble achieving the right consistency, add a few more drops of vegetable glycerin until you get.
After its mixed, scrap your paste into the jar and seal it tight. Store in a cool dry place in your bathroom. Make sure you do not store it in direct sunlight as that will dry it out.
If you dislike the idea of dipping your toothbrush into your jar of toothpaste, many websites sell empty toothpaste tubes as well. Again, an online search should wield many results for you.

If you prefer to not use toothpaste, you can mix up a tooth powder that will do the same thing. Freshen your breath, remove plaque, clean your mouth, and strengthen your gums.

Tooth whitening powder:
You will need:
A small jar with an air tight lid
A mixing bowl
1/4 Cup of white cosmetic clay
1/4 Cup of baking soda
2 drops of an essential oil, like peppermint, for flavoring and fresh breath smell
1/8 Cup sea salt, fine grain

In a mixing bowl, Mix all ingredients together. When its time to brush your teeth just moisten your mouth with a sip of water, and lightly roll you toothbrush in the tooth powder. Brush your teeth as normal.

To make a natural mouthwash:
You will need:
1 qt jar with airtight lid
1 qt of water
1 oz of fennel seeds (wards off tooth decay, freshens breath, cleans mouth, and strengthens gums)

In a heat proof jar or container, add 1 oz of fennel seeds. Put 1 qt of water on to boil. Once boiled, pour over the fennel seeds in the jar or container. Very tightly screw on the lid and leave it to infuse for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes have passed, strain out the seeds and re-cap tightly. Use as a mouthwash after each brushing.

To relieve toothaches:
Dilute essential clove oil in a small jar with vegetable glycerin. Pure essential clove oil is very strong and needs to be diluted! If applied directly to the mouth it could cause burning of the mouth, nausea, and vomiting among other side effects. Make sure you dilute it well.
Approx. 4 – 6 drops in a 4 oz jar of glycerin should do the trick. Then just rub on the effected tooth as needed. This works very nice for children because the vegetable glycerin has a very sweet taste and the clove oil works immediately to clean and numb the problem area. However, due how sweet it tastes they may attempt to keep putting it in their mouth more than necessary. If they end up swallowing to much of it at a time this could give them a serve tummy ache and possibly cause them to start vomiting. So it is very important to keep it out of reach and use your own judgment as to how often to apply it. Once every 4 – 6 hours should be enough to keep them pain free for the a day.

As always, please exercise caution if trying these methods. They may not work for everybody and no results are guaranteed to work. Those with allergies should be extremely careful. Always Consult a health care professional before trying any home remedy, especially if you are pregnant or nursing or giving it to a child.
