How to Make Homemade Hot Pastrami Sandwiches

Corned Beef, Pastrami, Rye Bread, Sargento

Even though hot pastrami deli sandwiches have pastrami, corned beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, Dijon mustard served on rye bread, you can make these deli style sandwiches at home. The hot pastrami sandwiches can be made for less than the ones bought in a deli; especially if you’re feeding a crowd.

I do not like rye bread, so I use wheat sandwich bread when using mine. Since I didn’t have corned beef lunch meat when I made wither of my versions, I substituted salami for it. I also didn’t make coleslaw for mine. I normally have big eye or baby Swiss on hand but I prefer cheddar cheese.

With my versions of hot pastrami sandwiches, I can make them in just a few minutes over the hour it takes to cook corned beef and pastrami in beef broth. You may be able to find corned beef at a deli where you live.

If your local grocery store, like Kroger, has high end lunch meats to be sliced, you may find corned beef there. I know I can find corned beef at some of the Dillon’s, a Kroger owned grocery chain in Kansas, at some stores where it sells well.

Another reason I make my homemade hot pastrami sandwiches like this is because sometimes I want a hot sandwich over a cold sandwich. The ingredients I use are from the sandwich meat counter in the meat area or from one of the deli’s at Wal-Mart or Dillon’s, regular sandwich bread, yellow mustard because that’s what I had on hand at the time, and cheddar cheese.

If you have kids who are particular in what they eat, kind of like I am, these sandwiches may be more suited for them. For you adults who prefer the originals, there is a recipe for the classic deli hot pastrami sandwiches located in the sources section of the article.
