How to Renew a Driver’s License in Massachusetts

Renewing

Renewing your driver’s license can be a task upon itself. This is especially true in Massachusetts. Whether you are renewing it for your 21st birthday or just because your license expired, knowing where you have to go and what you have to do in order to get your new license is important.

The only place you can renew your license is the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). So the first step of renewing your license in MA is to find the closest RMV to you. You can find the closest RMV with the RMV’s website, it list all of the locations http://www.mass.gov/rmv/ .

Now that you know the location of the closest RMV to you go to a website such as mapquest.com to get directions. Being able to find the closest RMV of connivance to you is especially important if you are out of state at the time or have never been to the Registry of Motor Vehicles before.

Once you have gotten inside you local RMV, grab your ticket and a renewal license form. You will have to wait for your number to be called in order for you to go up and start the renewal process.

Fill out the License Renewal form with all the necessary information. This will include your name, address, social security number, and similar informative pieces about yourself.

When your number is finally called go to the desk where the worker called out your number or where the screen above the desk displays your number (this is not available at all RMV’s but most have them). Give them the License Renewal form and be prepared to do several things. One of these is to get your picture taken. This happens for you 21 year old license and later license’s once you grow out of your picture (hence you are getting into your later years in life and they would like people to be able to recognize you). Another thing to be prepared for is the eye exam. You will often have to retake this to make sure your vision is the same as it was when u got your license or last had it renewed.

Once you have completed all the necessary steps and given the RMV all your information you will get a paper license. This license is good for driving only. Many stores will not accept it as a real form of identification. So if you’re just turning 21 try to do this before your license expires. Otherwise there will be no barhopping for you.

Wait one week for you plastic license to come in the mail.

Congratulations you have successfully renewed your driver’s license.
