How to Treat a Urinary Tract Infection

Blood in Urine, Urinary Tract, Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections frequent my life quite often since I was about 18 years old. I do not remember a year when I have not gotten a urinary tract infection. I’ve felt it all from cramping, frequent urination, blood in urine and pains while urinating. These are some of the common symptoms for a urinary tract infection.

Urinary tract infections are usually harmless if treated properly without allowing it to escalate. Escalation of an infection can lead to a more serious infection in the kidneys (which I’ve experienced once – NOT FUN!) which can lead to more serious consequences.

What causes a urinary tract infection?

An infection in the urinary tract occurs when bacteria gets into your urethra. This can happen from the kind of underwear you’re wearing. You want to make sure that you wear cotton underwear that allows moisture to escape. A moist environment creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

Drinking too many sweet drinks such as soda or even too many alcoholic drinks can also trigger a urinary tract infection. You want to make sure you get plenty of water to keep everything moving and clean on the inside.

Another cause for a urinary tract infection is wiping back to front. You want to sweep bacteria away from the uretha so it is recommended that you start front and wipe towards your backside.

Ways to treat a urinary tract infection

In my experience, the fastest way to treat a urinary tract infection is to go see a doctor and get a prescription for antibiotics. This will kill the bacteria that is causing the urinary tract infection. I am usually prescribed Doxycycline which is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Usually your medication will only take 3 days to completely cure the infection. However, some doctors may prescibe medication for up to 7 days. This is usually for more persistant infections. You can ask for low dose antibiotics if you have frequent urinary tract infections.

Drinking plenty of water will help flush out the infection. If you’re starting to notice signs of a urinary tract infection, make sure you start drinking plenty of water. I usually drink 2-3 cups an hour. Take as much as you can handle but do NOT overdo it.

Along with water, I recommend high dose Vitamin C. You should talk to your doctor first about any concerns about taking high dose vitamin C. I usually take 5000mg every night before bed with 2-3 glasses of water. Then I take another 2000mg when I wake up. This will raise the acidity in your urine which will create a harsh environment for bacteria to grow in your urinary tract. I have had experience getting rid of urinary tract infections using this technique. However, you have to be consistent with taking the vitamin C and drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

There is a natural supplement called D-Mannose that I have tried. This was recommended to me by my brother who used to work in a naturopathic clinic. D-Mannose is good for those stubborn urinary tract infections that even antibiotics cannot cure.
