How to Prepare for a Bank Teller Interview

Teller

So – you want to be a bank teller? Well, I think you are making an excellent decision. Banks are great places to work for, for a couple of reasons. First, banks are always going to be around – just like money. People always need money, and need a place to keep their money safe. Since people can earn money off of their own money in a bank, they will always be coming and going. Whether it’s the teller line, the ATM, the drive-thru, talking to a financial specialist, opening up CD’s or Bonds – you always have people needing to do something at the bank. The have also have great benefits, especially the biggest benefit of all – doing your own banking right from your job. How convenient, wouldn’t you say? I don’t have to wait in line to get cash, deposit any of my checks or wait in those long lines at the bank. I just hand it to my fellow teller and it’s done! Right then and there! So, here are my tips on how to win that job as a bank teller!

First – figure out which bank you’d like to interview for. Basically, fill out numerous online applications for banks in your town and make sure you say that you have cash handling experience in your resume or phone interview. Cash plays a big part in the bank – and these days, it’s sometimes hard to find honest, working people. Money is very tempting when you have $20,000.00 or more sitting in your drawer, some people cannot resist the temptation. Make sure you reiterate that you are a honest person and truthful in what you do.

Now, when it’s time for the interview itself at the bank you have been partially hired for, make sure to dress very professionally. I recommend a suit for men with a tie, and ladies – a nice dress or suit also. Nothing low-cut! When it’s time to actually sit down for your interview, you do not want any malfunctions or wardrobe issues to fix in front of your interviewers!

When it’s time to actually do the talking at the bank, make sure you explain how customer service and making the customer happy is your number one goal. Proficiency, speed and accuracy are also a biggie in the bank. Cash handling like I mentioned above is also another thing you want to talk about. I also threw in a situation where in another job I was witnessing something dishonest a fellow coworker was doing and relayed it to a supervisor immediately to them – they seemed to love this. The fact of my honesty and quickness in solving an issue at another job seemed to have them floored! When talking about money, state to them you have never stolen from a job and you have no intent to. Also make sure to tell them you like to sell things – checking account sales and credit card sales are a must for most tellers. They love hearing you can sell things and not be shy about it – so don’t be.

Now, other than teller requirements in a bank, make sure you explain to them how you are reliable and always on time. Also stating that you are willing to work extra hours or fill-in for someone sick is also a nice perk about yourself you can let them know about. Some questions that were asked at my interview were:

“What do you do when you have a dissatisfied and angry customer?”
My response: I simply keep my calm and composure, and use atonement, saying that I understand they are upset and will do everything I can to try to fix their situation. I also try very hard not to use the word “no” with my customers. If I must, I give an explanation why I cannot do something before I even say “no.”

“What would you do if an employee was stealing and you saw what they were doing was wrong?
My response: I would immediately let a supervisor know. Not because I am a tattle-tale, but because I know their dishonesty can lead to something being stolen from myself, or my coworkers. It’s also unfair if we are doing the same things and they are getting away with what they are doing making more than me. Of course I would let my manager know as soon as possible.

These are just a few, but try to answer questions with a previous situation, that way the manager who are interviewing you know you are not making up any old answer – this way they can say to themselves, “Wow, this has really happened to them before.” They will know you are answering truthfully to them

Good luck in your interview! Don’t be nervous – I have always went into interviews thinking I am interviewing them. Tell yourself they are privileged to have you, you are not privileged to work for them. It works every time with this type of confidence. Good look in your teller banking job
