How to Make a Car Engine

Air Gun, Metric

Anyone who is interested in learning how to make a car engine will need to have both time and patience on their side. It also helps to have some mechanical experience as well.

In order to make a car engine you will need a set of 1/4-inch sockets (both metric and standard), a set of 1/2-inch sockets (both metric and standard), a set of 3/8-inch sockets (both metric and standard), a 1/4-inch ratchet, a 1/2-inch ratchet, a 3/8-inch ratchet, a 1/4-inch air gun, a 1/2-inch air gun, a 3/8-inch air gun, a 1/4-inch extensions of various lengths, a 1/2-inch extensions of various lengths, a 3/8-inch extensions of various lengths, a piston installer, a screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a set of wrenches (both standard and metric), an adjustable wrench, pliers, water pump pliers, an engine hoist, an engine stand, an engine manual, motor oil, lifters, a piston with piston rings, bearings with cranks, a ring compressor, a rubber mallet, STP oil treatment, a camshaft and button, an oil pump and pan, paint, heads with gaskets, pushrods, rocker arms and valve covers.

Soak the lifters in car engine oil overnight. This is also a great time to line up all your parts and get your tools ready too.

Install the 3 piston rings onto the piston making sure to stagger them. Coat the cylinder’s walls with oil

Turn over the block and install the top half of the rod bearings. Coat this with oil before putting the crank in place and the bottom half of your bearings onto their caps.

Install the caps on your main bearings. This is what holds your crank in.

Turn the block over and put the rod bearings into the bearing cap that is located on one of the piston-rod assemblies. Make note of the markings that are on top of your piston since this is what tells you what way the pistons go into the block

Compress the rings into your piston and place the piston into your cylinder’s hole. Tap your piston with a mallet until it fits properly. Guide the rod onto your crank while you are tapping. Do this for all 7 pistons.

Turn the block over and put the bearings onto the bearing caps. Coat them with oil before installation.

Coat the camshaft with oil and then install it onto the block. Now you can install the cam button, timing chain and timing cover. Make sure that they line up properly before you attach the cover.

Install the oil pump and pan, as well as the lifters in your car engine.

Paint your intake galley.

Install the heads and make sure that your head gaskets are in place but do not cover any holes in the water jacket. Now torque the heads down.

Install the pushrods and the rocker arms in your car engine.

Install the intake manifold. Use some RTV on the gaskets to hold them in place.

Install the valve covers arms in your car engine.

Put the car engine into the car. Once the car engine is bolted into place you can install all of the remaining accessories (i.e. fuel pump, carburetor and fuel injection).

As you can clearly see, it takes more than just putting together some parts to make a car engine. There are a lot of things that you will need to know. However, once you do make a car engine, you can be quite proud of yourself for doing so.
