Designer jeans can get expensive. A nice pair of jeans could cost you over a $100; some jeans are even over $200. I believe everyone should own at least one or two pairs of nice jeans. With the high cost of jeans you want your jeans to last forever, or at least until they go out of style. Here are some tips and tricks to help keep your jeans looking their best for longer.
Holes in denim are a big fad right now. A great way to keep store bought holes or wear and tear holes from getting bigger is to apply a small amount of clear fingernail polish to the edge of the hole. Warning: don’t go overboard with the nail polish too much or the hole will be scratchy when the polish dries. If you put on too much polish, a small amount of polish remover can help remove the nail polish, but beware of the remover. Test on an unseen part of the denim as it might have an effect on the dye in the jeans.
Washing your jeans. Denim does not need to be washed after every wear. For the dye in the jeans to look the best, never washing your jeans is the best way to go. I personally cannot do this because I like things clean. I try to wash my jeans after 5 to 6 wears. The less you wash your jeans the better. The best way is to hand wash them. Soak the jeans in laundry detergent water. Let the jeans sit in the soapy water for a bit, then gently agitate the jeans, allowing the water to move through the fabric. Never scrub your jeans. Scrubbing causes the fibers to become weak, resulting in holes and fading of the color dye. Rinse jeans three times to make sure all the soap comes out. If you decide to wash your jeans in the washing machine, turn them inside out. Wash on gentle cycle in cold water.
Some brands of jeans have rhinestones on them. The rhinestones sometimes come off, especially if they are located on the back pocket. If a few fall off, it’s usually not noticeable, but if it bugs you, replace them. Buy replacement jewels at craft stores or on the web at stores like http://www.threadart.com/shop/. When purchasing jewels, make sure they are hot fix rhinestones; these come with the glue already on them. You can buy a specialty hot fix applicator for around $20, but I found a regular home iron (make sure steam is off) works just as well to apply the stones.
Another tip to keep your jeans looking their best is to always make sure your jeans are hemmed to the right length. If your jeans drag at all, this will cause the back of them to be worn off. To me there is nothing worse looking than to see a chunk of denim missing from the bottom of the pant leg. Stores like The Buckle, that sell designer jeans, sometimes will offer free hemming. When buying your jeans always ask about this perk.
Jeans can be expensive, but nicer brands of jeans do tend to last longer unless they are covered in holes. By taking care of your jeans they should last years. The dress code in most places has become more relaxed, and jeans have become the dress code in most places. I do recommend owning at least one really nice pair of jeans for going out.
