How to Take Care of a Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature, Premium Dog Food, Schnauzer

The breed of dog called miniature schnauzers are full of life, energetic and very loving. They also like to show off and can be persistent when they want you to pay attention to them. Here are some tips on taking care of a miniature schnauzer.

1. What to feed your miniature schnauzer.

Your pup should be fed a premium dog food that has the first ingredient listed as meat, rather than grains. Take heed to not overfeed your schnauzer since he might grow to be overweight.

2. Always be sure that you keep your miniature schnauzer on a leash.

This breed of dog thinks it is a big dog and is notorious for taking on dogs no matter how big they are. When walking outdoors, in order to keep everyone safe, you should always have your miniature schnauzer on a leash.

3. Meeting other people and pets.

It is a good idea to socialize your miniature schnauzer with other dogs beginning when it is just a puppy. As he gets older, you can therefore avoid hostility toward other dogs because he will be use to being around other dogs. It also does not hurt to let your miniature schnauzer get used to being around other humans besides yourself. Otherwise, as they get older, they will have a tendency to be unfriendly around people they are not familiar with.

4. Instruction.

The breed of miniature schnauzer can typically be stubborn, and if you let him, he will completely take over the power in the household. When he is just a puppy, teach your pup correct manners in order to be in command of situations. Fortunately, the miniature schnauzer is recognized for learning fast and is a very intellectual breed.

5. Keeping fit and having fun.

Your miniature schnauzer will thoroughly enjoy going for a run or walk daily. This breed of dog also loves personal attention and playing and running off leash. If the miniature schnauzer is constantly left by itself, it will become bored very easily. Be sure that your dog receives adequate exercise but he does not necessarily require a large backyard to play.

6. Proper health care.

It is very important that a miniature schnauzer receives proper veterinarian care such as annual vaccinations and examinations. At the first sign of injury or illness, take your pup to the vet. Miniature schnauzers are more likely to get some health conditions such as liver disease, kidney stones, and a bleeding disorder than other breeds. An additional potential medical problem with schnauzers is cataracts, so have their eyes checked regularly. All of these health conditions can be corrected if found early.

7. Periodic grooming.

A miniature schnauzer’s fur coat is special and needs brushed every day with a wire brush. It is also recommended to have the coat trimmed at least twice a year. Between trimmings, it is suggested to clip the hair around the pup’s mouth, ears, eyes and nose to avoid mats from forming. Additionally, it is a good idea to trim the schnauzer’s nails every few weeks. One good thing is that schnauzers tend to not shed and don’t require very much specialized grooming. In order to avoid dental problems in later life, their teeth need to be brushed a few times a week.

Miniature schnauzers are a great breed of dog and do not require much extra care than most other breeds. If you exercise him, give him good food, socialization and some grooming, your miniature schnauzer should live a long and happy life.
