How to Apply Perfect Makeup

Colored Mascara, Small Eyes

Do you want to look like a Hollywood celebrity or high fashion model but after you put on your make-up you look more like a Kabuki doll? Knowing the right make-up and color schematic for your skin and hair tones is the most important part of making your make-up look flawless.

The first thing to do is go to a department store make-up counter and have an expert analyze your skin. You need to know whether you are dry, oily or combination before you can pick out a foundation. After you determine your skin type then you need to figure out how much coverage you need.

If you have fairly perfect skin then you might want to go with a tinted mositurizer which will add just a pop of color to your skin but not give 100% coverage. A good foundation for well maintained skin is also one of the bare minerals brush on foundations. If your skin has problem areas a heavy base may be needed. MAC and Clinique make the two most widely used department store make-ups. If you are on more of a budget try Revlon skinlights or any of the L’Oreal products available at mass market drug store chains.

Before you put on foundation you want to begin with a freshly-washed face. This will give you a ‘clean canvas’ before adding anything to your skin. No matter what type for skin you have, it is important to moisturize before you put on foundation (unless you are using a tinted moisturizer). Moisturizing first will avoid having your foundation look like it’s sitting ontop of your skin and sinking into the crevices giving you that harsh look.

Apply a sheer foundation that matches your skin tone. If you aren’t sure which color matches your skin your best bet is to seek the advice of an expert at a department store. Nothing looks worse than foundation that is four colors darker than your neck. Apply your makeup with a sponge. Your best bet is to start at the hairline and work your way down taking careful measure to blend into the neck area.

After your foundation is on take concealer to cover any spots or dark circles the foundation did not cover. Then apply a loose powder all over the face. Even though most powders come with a ‘powder puff’ you should use a large brush – it will apply the powder more evenly and leave less excess on your face.
If you are particularly pale, at this stage you may want to add a light bronzer on top of your powder to add some color to your skin. The most natural bronzer is made by Physicians Formula and available at drugstores and mass market retailers (Target, Wal Mart, etc).

Once your bronzer is applied, add a amount of blush to the apples of your cheeks. Smile so you can see the apple of your cheek. Start the application at the apple and drag the blush backward toward your ears. If you are not familiar with using cream blushers it will be easier to manipulate a powdered blush.
From there, move on to the eyes. If you have small eyes, you may want to use liner. For small eyes you want to apply the liner under your eyelashes. For larger eyes, apply the liner on the inner eyelid and on top.

Next, put on the eyeshadow. Almay makes a great three-color trio that you match to your eye color if you are unsure what colors look good on you. Traditionally, the lighter color is for the lid, the darker color is for the crease on the lid and the third color is for the skin just below the brwn. Make sure you blend the color toward the outer corner of your eye.

If your eyebrows are nonexistent or blonde or red use an eyebrow pencil color that is very close to your natural eyebrow color and fill in the missing areas. Eyebrows should look very natural.

Put on mascara. Again, you should try and match with your skin tone and hair tone. Blondes and red heads look best with a dark brown/black mascara while ethnic skin tones and deep brown and black hair looks best with black masacara.

Colored mascara, such as blue should be avoided at all costs.Unless its Halloween.

The last step is lining and coloring the lips. Your lip liner should match the lipstick or ip gloss you are putting on; nothing is more ugly than dark lip liner matched with a lighter lipstick. It’s trashy!

Pointers:
Match your colors, if you aren’t sure go to a professional
Put on your make-up under good lighting
Know the difference between day make-up and night make-up
Wash your make-up off every night before going to bed
Throw unused make-up away after a year
Clean your brushes regualrly
Don’t use soap to take off waterproof mascara, use eye make-up remover. Soap can damage your lashes and cause them to thin and/or fall out
