10 of the Most Exotic Dog Breeds

Black Tongue, Chinese Crested, Chow Chow, Hairless Dogs

A man’s best friend is his dog, and those best friends come in all sizes and colors. According to the American Kennel Club, there are more than 160 recognized breeds of dogs in America. Some of these breeds are quite exotic and unique. Here are 10 of the most unusual dog breeds out there.

1. Komondor
This dog looks like a walking mop. Their coat is made up of thick cord-like curls that reach the ground. They are usually white, although some dogs may have light shading. This breed is a flock guardian or protector, not a herder. They are calm dogs that can think for themselves in tough situations. Since they were designed to protect their charges, Komondors are strong and loyal. Typically they weigh between 60 and 80 pounds. Be aware that if you decide to get a Komondor that their bark is quite loud if they decide someone is a threat. This could pose a problem in apartment complexes or condos where noise is an issue.

2. Chinese Shar-Pei
These are ancient Chinese dogs that known for their many wrinkles. They have short, rough fur and a unique black tongue. They do have a bit of a short fuse, which can be overwhelming when paired with their strong build. They don’t like having their nails trimmed and may be very difficult to control. These dogs fight to the death and cannot be physically dominated. This is not a dog for those with children or other pets.

3. Ibizan Hound
This is a slender hunting dog with a long, narrow snout. They are friendly dogs that are both calm and alert. They do require lots of exercise, but should not be off a leash unless they are in an area surrounded with 6-foot tall fences. They are very agile and can jump higher than most dogs. A word of caution: these dogs will eat anything you leave out.

4. Portuguese Water Dog
This is a strong dog with a commanding presence. They originated in Portugal, where they assisted fishermen. They have great stamina in the water, helping herd schools of fish and delivering messages between boats. These dogs do not shed much and have a hypoallergenic coat, a plus for those with allergies. They are a loyal dog and get along well with children. One thing to consider is that Portuguese Water Dogs do not like to be without their family for long periods of time, so kennels are not an option if you go out of town.

5. Chinese Crested
The hairless version of this toy dog is truly the most interesting because it has hair. The hair on their head looks like ponytails, and the hair on their paws look like socks. This dog is described as loving and playful.

6. Peruvian Inca Orchid
This sounds like an exotic flower but it is actually a sighthound dog. They can be coated or hairless but either way they all have a spot on the top of their head called a “kiss spot.” The hairless dogs actually have skin that can come in a variety of different color combinations. These dogs are calm and devoted to their owners. They are not usually friendly with strangers but they are not usually aggressive with them either.

7. Chow Chow
We have all probably heard of a Chow Chow, but not everyone knows that they have a black tongue like the Chinese Shar-Pei! Another unique characteristic of the Chow Chow is their frowning look or scowl. Although they may look like they’re in a bad mood, Chow Chows are generally pleasant. However, Chow Chows are independent and need to be eased into meetings with strangers by their owner.

8. Schapendoes
This is a herding dog that has great jumping abilities and agility. These dogs are not well known, but maybe that’s because their name is hard to pronounce. It is a shame because they are actually great house pets. They are eager to please and are friendly.

9. Coton de Tulear
This is a rare breed that got its start in ancient Madagascar. As you can image from their name, Coton de Tulears look like big cotton balls. They are very easy to train and not usually high strung like some other small breeds. They generally get along with all members of the family, including cats and other dogs.

10. Clumber Spaniel
This dog has a deep chest and short legs. It is a powerful hunting dog and an affectionate friend. If you are thinking of getting a Clumber Spaniel, keep in mind that they slobber a lot because of the shape of their mouths. They also shed quite a bit, although females of the breed tend to have a little less hair.
