Free Tourist Attractions in Washington, D.C

Summertime in Washington, D.C. usually brings out tourist from different parts of this country and other countries too. If you are a tourist or even a person who lives in or near the city, there are quite a few tourist attractions that you can see for free. Here is my list of free tourist attractions that you should check out the next time you visit Washington, D.C.

There are quite a few historical landmarks in D.C. that you can visit free of charge. You can tour the White House, though to get a guided tour inside the White House you have to make a request at least six months in advance through your Member of Congress and your tour group must consist of 10 people or more. Other historical landmarks to check out while you are in D.C. are The Washington Monument, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and The Lincoln Memorial.

If you are trying to get out of the hot sun, than you may like to check out some of the free museums that D.C. has to offer. There is The National History Museum located at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue. This museum highlights historical artifacts. Also check out The Air and Space Museum located on Independence Avenue at 4th Street. At this museum you can see different types of airplanes. There is also The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which is located just south of Independence Avenue. If you are more into art, than there is The National Gallery of Art located at Eighth and F Street. You can also visit the Freer and Sackler Galleries and The National Museum of African Art.

For those who enjoy being outside, than check out The National Zoo located on Connecticut Avenue. The National Zoo has all types of animals. There is everything from lions and elephants to more exotic types of animals. One of the star attractions at the zoo is Tia Shan, the baby giant panda that was born a couple of years ago.

If you come to D.C. on a weekday during lunchtime, than check out the free summer concert series at the Woodrow Wilson Plaza in The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center located on 13th and Pennsylvania Avenue. This daily concert series runs from early June to September. The concerts take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is a variety of people who perform at these concerts. Some days local artists perform, while other days you may catch a well known recording artist performing.

The next time you visit Washington, D.C. be sure to check out some of these attractions. Most of them are conveniently located near a Metro Rail Station. All of these places are great for people of any age. So come enjoy the sights and sounds of D.C., you will be glad you did.
