‘Stop and smell the roses’ is a cliché that is widely used in the United States. We are all familiar with its meaning, which is, to take time to appreciate a situation or slow down and pay attention to what is going on around you. ‘Stop and smell the roses’ is commonly used when talking to someone who seems too busy to enjoy life.

In researching this phrase, I was unable to find its exact origin, however it is believed to have originated in the United States. Some believe that it dates back around 100 years; however, there is no documentation supporting that belief. One particular reference suggested that it originated with a album released in the early 1980’s by Ringo Starr. The album was titled ‘Stop and Smell the Roses,” however it is my contention that the phrase was in use long before Starr recorded his album. One reference suggests that ‘stop and smell the roses’ was used in conversation between friends, one of whom had a beautiful rose garden. The friend worked so diligently in the rose garden that she did not take the time to enjoy her work. Her friend gently reminded her to stop working and experience the beauty she had created.
