The 10 Most Classic OLTL Todd Manning Scenes

Manning

Roger Howarth admits himself to General Hospital after a final stint leading up to the finale of the ABC daytime drama One Life To Live (OLTL). Honoring the past sarcastic criminal mind of OLTL’s Todd Manning leaves fans wondering. Could one of daytime’s most notorious villains (Todd Manning) and his family escape to another time slot? Shockingly so.

Move over Sonny Corinthos! Make way for the Manning family.

ABC canceled multiple daytime soaps including Passions and All My Children. OLTL ended on Friday leaving General Hospital (GH) the leading daytime drama on the Emmy roster. Consolidating or cornering the market? Six OLTLrs will be joining GH on ABC (airs 3 p.m. Monday – Friday, unless otherwise noted).

Most OLTL fans have heard the news. Roger Howarth (Todd Manning), Kassie DePaiva (Todd’s OLTL wife, Blair), Kristen Alderson (Todd’s OLTL daughter Starr) and Michael Easton (FBI Agent John McBain) have joined GH. Obviously a Michael Malone moment here. He created all four characters. Malone is one of daytime’s greatest writers and one of my favorites.

North Carolinian Michael Malone came up with the 1993 rape storyline and Ron Carlivati came up with the re-rape of 2008 between the two same characters – Todd Manning and Marty Saybrooke. They both bring an edge to their work. OLTL head writer Ron Carlivati will also be joining General Hospital.

The true OLTL cliff hanger is how the OLTL characters will be “weaved” to fit GH. GH executive producer Frank Valentini confirms on ABC that there is a need to continue the OLTL legacy. Below you’ll find 10 Todd Manning scenes that may have sealed Valentini’s decision.

Todd Manning found the perfect actor match in Roger Howarth. Howarth nailed the self-involved psychopath character who raped Carol Swift, raped Marty Saybrooke (tried a second time), escaped from prison, terrorized an attorney (Nora), kidnapped, killed, mayhem, and so on, and so on. We begin with the entry of a trouble making rich frat boy named Todd Manning and end with the general OLTL finale.

  1. In one of the first 1992 Todd Manning scenes the frat brat hooks up with Marty Saybrooke, a somewhat loose canon. Manning smokes a joint with an already buzzed Marty Saybrooke at Roadies (the bar). They were confronted by Jake (the staff). In the OLTL YouTube video scene titled “One of Todd and Marty’s first encounters” America caught a slight whiff of Manning’s careless cocky attitude between fine performances by his less-than-terrorizing and more-than-snotty frat counterparts. Marty turns frisky on Todd. Todd obliges.
  2. Prior to this 1993 Spring Fling scene Manning and Saybrooke were verbally attacking each other. Todd introduces a Marty blow-up doll to the party goers. But what Manning did not expect was Marty to pop it and detail Todd’s need for a blow-up doll to begin with. Note, the two top scenes are basics. Prepare for some classic Todd Manning coming up!
  3. The explosive Todd Manning fight scene can be found on a YouTube video titled “Todd Manning Part 162.” The OLTL classic Todd Manning scene begins at point 2:42. In this scene Todd wrestles Bo Buchanan to the ground after a couple of punches and manages to place his foot on Powell Lord III’s hand as it reaches for the gun. Manning grabs the gun and leaves in a blaze of hurry. Bo chases him, they face each other, someone gets shot, Todd throws himself into the cold river and Rebecca, the girl he kidnapped, ends up Manning’s favorite cheering squad – she freaks! Howarth does so well in this scene that fans envisioned an uprising movie career in the future.
  4. For a confessional experience like never before view the OLTL YouTube scene “Todd Manning Part 177” then view “Todd Manning Part 182” for the follow-up church visit. But if you really want to see a less talkative Manning (as a nun) visit the OLTL YouTube scene titled “OLTL 2001-123 Sister Todd at St. Anne’s.” One has to admit. Manning makes one ugly nun.
  5. Search “Todd Manning part 545” on YouTube to catch Todd and Blair giving swift talking David Vickers a not-so-good day. Blair displays a wicked side that nearly drives Vickers is up a wall as he leaves in a fit of confusion after spilling the beans that they slept together. The manipulative Blair finds Manning having less of a problem with her bedfellows and more of a problem being non-attracted to her evil ways.
  6. Todd scares Llanview in this OLTL Todd Manning Part 317 YouTube clip. This is an over-dramatized scene of a hospital staff in fear. It doesn’t get any worse than this folks! Manning walks down a hall as one staff member stops what they are doing to dodge being seen. Other staff members hide in rooms. But as the scene continues Todd opens up during a therapy session to remind (and taunt) Powell Lord III (the “other” serial rapist) who trusts Manning most – Powell’s girlfriend Rebecca.
  7. The Manning phone booth scene allows viewers to see Roger Howarth’s flexibility. An angry Todd Manning makes a call from a phone booth to seek the whereabouts of Rebecca. But he has to hide his identity. Manning whips out a geek character and rolls with it. “Oh, hi, this is Ken…”. Manning’s voice changes in a hilarious scene hidden behind unhealthy intentions. You’ll crack a laugh at least once when viewing the Todd Manning Part 203 (begin at 4:22) YouTube video. Count on it.
  8. One of the most explosive performances of Todd Manning came when Todd kidnapped 14 people to figure out who killed the character of Georgie. And if no one came forward they were all going to “leave in body bags.” Manning’s scripted words did prove highly entertaining. The only problem was that everyone started to confess to the murder until everyone figured out Todd was strapped to a fake dummy bomb. It could only happen to Todd Manning. This OLTL Todd Manning scene can be viewed, again, on YouTube (Todd Manning Part 1/10).
  9. In 2011 Roger Howarth returned to OLTL after leaving years ago. The storyline was remarkably unrealistic involving his return but Howarth’s character was the much needed eye candy in an otherwise sugar-free world. The storyline can be found under the YouTube title “Todd & Victor Reveal, Part 817” whereas the mother (doctor) explains how she transformed one man into another by brainwashing with somewhat of a “face-off” if you will. The cat was out of the bag and Todd Manning found another enemy at reach – Victor Lord – by acc-identity. Thanks to Mitch Lawrence’s “man with the iron mask” prisoner plan, Victor assumed Manning’s newspaper publishing life (as the doctor instructed) while Manning was nowhere to be found. Manning came back this year and he let everyone know about it. Especially Victor Lord, Jr..
  10. The last OLTL scene (ever) can be viewed on the main site. After 44 years of OLTL running time the final moments arrive. Not too drama-ridden. Todd Manning says to Blair, “Guess I’m going to have to sing you a song now.” Blair agrees. I don’t know any songs.” Blair responds, “Think of one.” And in busts cool hand John McBain headed by his “mob squad of one” uniformed cop to arrest Manning for the (mock) murder of Victor Lord, Jr.. Todd and Blair lay in bed naked with a sheet covering as Blair, in a half-cocked voice says, “What the hell?” John begins his police rounds by charging Todd Manning for the murder of Victor Lord, Jr.. Viewers could see that it was time for Todd to get out of bed since Manning’s script wheels continue to turn – towards General Hospital, the “hospital that never sleeps.
