Brunch at Geoffrey’s Malibu

Brie, Los Angeles Hotels, Pacific Coast, Pacific Coast Highway

Whether you live in Los Angeles or are just visiting, I think an ocean-side meal is an essential part of the California experience. For almost 30 years, Geoffrey’s Malibu has offered guests fine dining in an ideal location overlooking the ocean in Malibu.

I’ve lived in Los Angeles for a long time and although I’ve driven by Geoffrey’s numerous times, I had never actually eaten there. While on a Sunday drive, we decided to make a trip up the coast and finally experience it.

The Drive
Part of the fun is the beautiful drive up the coast, along the Pacific Coast Highway. Passing some of the most incredible, most expensive real estate in the country, just driving along the ocean is a great experience. The restaurant is located on Pacific Coast Highway, about 40 minutes north of Santa Monica. Valet parking is available.

The Meal
What a wonderful experience the meal was, from start to finish. To sit overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, with a view extending 26 miles out to Catalina Island in front of us, and the Santa Monica bay to our left, was a great way to start the meal. There are several outdoor seating sections, the hot area seemed to the be the large patio that extends further towards the ocean. We had a table overlooking the sea, next to the windows facing the bar area. The are also tables inside.

The restaurant is on a bluff overlooking the ocean, but there is a residential street and a row of beachfront homes below it and between it and the beach. The residential surroundings and position on a cliff overlooking the ocean gives the restaurant a European feel. I felt like I was dining somewhere in the South of France.

We arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon and were seated without delay. To our advantage, it was about 3 P.M., after the lunch rush. I started with a fresh orange juice and the baked brie in puffed pastry. The juice was sweet and fresh-squeezed and the brie had a flaky crust and gooey cheese inside. The brie came with pear chutney and was served with buerre blanc and roasted pine nuts.

For my brunch I went for the challah french toast with chicken sausage. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The french toast was great and I enjoyed the sausages so much I ordered two more. My girlfriend had the Scotch Benedict, their take on eggs benedict with smoked salmon on a toasted croissant, with rosemary potatoes, fruit and hollandaise sauce.

The drinks were also superb, I had their CoCotini, a coconut martini that was perfect for a beach brunch, and my girl had a pomegranate mojito, which was also refreshing. Dinner for two, with five cocktails, was $138, before gratuity. After lunch we walked about 50 yards down the highway to beach-access steps and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the almost private beach.
