Four Indestructible Dog Toys!

Choosing a Dog, Dog Toys, German Shepherds, Indestructible

When I say indestructible dog toys, I have to qualify that by saying these toys are indestructible in most cases. Having been the parent to several large mixed breed German shepherds in my lifetime, I know many dogs, if they’re determined and persistent enough can destroy almost anything. But the toys I’m about to mention are certainly geared to stand up to most of the abuse the average dog can dish out.

First of all, when choosing a dog toy, go for toys that are round in shape, as opposed to flat. It’s much more difficult for a dog to destroy a round object than it is a flat one. Also keep in mind the type of material the toy is made of. I’ve had alot of success with large, hard balls made of polyethylene material. Our German shepherds were completely unsuccessful at destroying these. Keeping that in mind, here are some virtually indestructible dog toys:

1. The Hurley

This is a dumbbell shaped bone that’s guaranteed to be indestructible. It’s made of a soft, durable material called Zogoflex. According to the advertisement, “it bounces, it flies, it floats, and best of all, it lasts!”. I tested this one out on our dogs and despite much effort, they were unable to destroy it. Plus, it keeps them entertained for hours. I found mine at a website called doggoneclean.com.

2. The Mighty Kong

You may have heard of this one since its been around since the mid 1970’s. This particular toy was developed by a German shepherd owner who was concerned because his dog was chewing on rocks. In desperation, his owner who was working under his car, tossed some car parts at his dog. When he threw the suspension belt, his dog turned his attention to chewing that. From that suspension belt, the idea for the Mighty Kong was born. After refining the product and making it more durable, this desperate dog owner created an indestructible dog toy loved by thousands. You should be able to find one at your local pet store.

3. Sqwuggies Squeak ‘nTug Toy

This toy actually does squeak, but it won’t annoy you since the squeak is at a high frequency designed for a dog’s hearing, not a human’s. What a great idea! What makes this toy so tough? It’s made of recycled fire hoses. If you have a water loving dog such as a retriever, this toy will be most welcome since it floats. Many pet stores will stock this particular indestructible dog toy.

4. A Large, Hard Polyethylene Plastic Ball

These balls come under various brand names and really are indestructible. We’ve had one in our house for years and it looks almost new, despite the fact it gets rolled around the house and gnawed upon. Because the ball is so much larger than the mouth of a dog, it’s almost impossible to destroy it. Dogs seem to enjoy the challenge of trying to conquer this one. Hee! Hee! They just don’t have much success! Just ask for a big, firm polyethylene ball at your pet store. Be sure to choose a size that’s much larger than your dog’s mouth.

Give these indestructible dog toys a try, and I’ll bet you’ll be paying fewer trips to your pet store to replace destroyed dog toys!
