10 Best Summer Action Movies of 2010

Action Movies, Monica Bellucci

Don’t miss the best upcoming summer action movies of 2010, and beat the heat without leaving your seat! You don’t have to break a sweat (or risk getting a heat stroke) to experience an adrenaline rush this summer; just head to your local theater to get your heart pounding with the best summer action movies of 2010 on this list:

Iron Man 2 – When it comes to summer action movies, none are getting more buzz than this superhero flick about the man in the shiny robotic super suit. Despite the fact that the preview I recently saw makes me cringe at the thought of watching giant jerk Tony Stark win again in the end, it’s hard not to be excited about the new villains, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. With the world now aware of Stark’s secret identity and showering him with praise and attention, his head might just grow big enough to shatter his indestructible headgear. Fortunately, his lavish celebrity lifestyle will likely be brought to a halt by the pesky military and Mickey Rourke’s shocking new character taking him down a few notches. So don’t miss seeing Stark temporarily put in his place with one of the biggest action movies to get your summer started on May 7, 2010.

Robin Hood – As a big fan of Errol Flynn, it’s had to be excited about Robin Hood being made yet again, especially with Russell Crowe playing the titular role (seriously, wouldn’t he make a better Sheriff of Nottingham?). Still, it would be nice to see Ridley Scott return to form with what could be one of better-written summer action movies of 2010, and period pieces are at least always pretty to look at (the trailer does look epically awesome!). Just beware this movie’s “socialist” message about stealing from the rich and giving to the poor when it hits theaters on May 14, 2010.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – With no ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies out to take a fun-filled, action-packed cruise with this summer, Disney is banking on a movie based on a video game rather than a theme park ride to take its place (but there will still be plenty of swords!). This new action flick looks a bit like Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ brought to life with a street urchin-turned-adventurous prince and princess out to stop an evil ruler from procuring the Dagger of Time, a powerful tool that can unlock the Sands of Time and allow their controller to rule the world. Perhaps the plot sounds predictable, but you’ve got to love the sandy setting and a cast that includes Jake Gyellenhaal, the lovely Gemma Arterton, and Ben Kingsley. So be sure to bring the whole family to what could be the beginning of a new fun Disney franchise, and cool off while the Sands of Time stop for one of the most anticipated action movies of the summer on May 28, 2010.

The A-Team – An A-Team movie with no Mr. T? I pity the moviegoers missing out on his butt-kicking Baracus. Still, it’s hard to deny that the film version of this kitschy, action-packed 80’s series is one of the most anticipated action movies of the summer, with the likes of Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, and Jessica Biel attached to it. Many moviegoers were not A-round when the first A-Team was, but even those who have never experienced the Vietnam war vets’ awesome van in action should enjoy this modern update about a group of Iraqi war veterans trying to clear their names from a crime for which they were framed. So don’t miss this summer action (with a capital “A”) movie when it hits theaters on June 11, 2010.

Jonah Hex – Here’s another of the summer action movies of 2010 based on a comic book, but I’m looking forward to this one more than ‘Iron Man 2′ due to its bizarre storyline and cast of characters. In an alternate comic book universe, Jonah Hex is a scarred bounty hunter living in the Wild West during the days following the Civil War. He’s also a wanted man with a price on his head that’s given an offer he can’t refuse from the military: stop a terrorist’s plot to make the world a living hell in order to become a free man. Of course it’s cool that Josh Brolin is playing Hex and John Malkovich Turnbull the terrorist, but most buzz has been over photos of Megan Fox, who will be playing a gun-toting prostitute, in teeny-tiny corsets that make her already nonexistent waistline all but disappear. So whether you’re looking for action movies based on comic books, westerns, or summer movies with some eye candy to go along with that extra-large box of theater candy, don’t miss the summer movie that’s got it all on June 18, 2010.

Predators – It may seem odd to cast Adrien Brody and Topher Grace as the predators’ newest potential victims, but they just might make this almost-remake one of the most interesting action movies of the summer. So will the added “s” make this one as good as the ‘Alien’ sequel, or will this excuse to try and make the aliens with deadly disappearing acts look a little bit more polished fail to empty the pockets of its prey? It’s really hard to tell, but at least the adorable Alice Braga will add some much-needed girl power to one of the only sci-fi summer action movies of 2010 when it hits theaters on July 9th.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Will Disney have two big blockbuster action movies this summer? Creating a whole movie around the famous ‘Fantasia’ sequence featuring a lazy Mickey and billions of brooms might seem like a stretch, but moviegoers might like a good dose of a little more wizardry before Harry Potter’s world come to an end. Like the Disney tale, a master sorcerer is trying to teach his apprentice how to use magic the right way, but here Nicholas Cage needs average Joe Jay Baruchel’s help to defend New York City from his arch-nemesis. There’s something for everyone in the family here with magic, a little love story (Teresa Palmer will be playing Baruchel’s love interest), and of course, plenty of action. Add Monica Bellucci as a bewitching beauty, and this is one of the summer action movies of 2010 that you must see when it hits theaters on July 16, 2010.

Salt – All you need to know is that this movie is a combination of Angelina Jolie and action to predict that it will be one of the biggest action movies of the summer. She plays a CIA officer accused of being a spy who must go on the lam and find a way to clear her good name, which likely means lots of chase sequences and double-crosses. Sure the plot sounds just a bit thin, but who cares? As a gal that’s just mad over makeovers, I’m looking forward to seeing Angelina Jolie’s multiple hair color changes (a master of disguise she ain’t; you can’t hide that hotness), and it’ll be nice to see one of the few summer action movies of 2010 with a female lead on July 23, 2010.

The Expendables – Since this movie stars aging action figures Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, it’s hard not to laugh at the title. However, ‘Retirement Home Rambo’ might not be so bad; it could be good in that cult movie sort of way. It’s about a group of mercenaries (expendable ones, if I am guessing correctly) that head to South America on a mission (a suicide one, I suppose) to overthrow a dictator. Since I kind of miss Sly’s nonsensical slurrings, it’s hard not to look forward to one of the rawest summer action movies of 2010. Look for the old guys on August 13th.

Takers – Okay, so there have been many, many action movies involving bank robberies over the years, and it’s hard for me to get excited about Paul Walker and Chris Brown sharing the silver screen, but this movie has one big (and formerly blue) thing going for it: Zoe Saldana. Miss Salt better watch her back as this other spicy superstar continues to steal the show in any movie she’s in, whether she’s making fanboys drool in ‘Star Trek’ or giving fangirls an impossible standard to live up to in ‘Avatar’. So come for the predictable plot twists and turns; stay to see this lovely leading lady in her true form when one of the summer action movies that you can’t miss (even if it’s only for one reason) hits theaters on August 20, 2010.

So from crime to sci-fi and superheroes, the summer action movies of 2010 will work your heart out while you sit in your cool theater seat, so who needs to sweat it out on that uncomfortable exercise bike? They may not get you in great shape, but at least you can entertain your date with the best summer action movies of 2010 on this list.
