Ohio’s Haunted Mudhouse Mansion

Fairfield County, Haunted Mansion

With Halloween fast approaching, a certain Ohio haunted mansion immediately comes to mind. Like all creepy haunted house stories this one is replete with a crazy older lady owner, mysterious fires and guards that will chase you off the property. I have been curious about this haunted mansion ever since I moved to Ohio almost 6 years ago. The first time I researched the Mudhouse Mansion was about 4 years ago. At that time there were many websites dedicated to the Mudhouse Mansion. Curiously most of them are now gone with the exception of this one named Forgotten Ohio.

Local Ohio legend states that the mansion owner was a government official that used to keep slaves on the property locked in outbuildings every night. One night a slave dug under the outbuilding and murdered the entire family while they were sleeping. The other legend states this is the mansion of the original bloody Mary. You know the one where you turn out the lights and say “bloody Mary” three times to make her appear. Apparently either Mary or her husband killed her children in the mansion and shes not happy about it.

Through research I learned that the owners name is Jeane Mast. For some reason many internet reports spell her name as “Jeannie Mast” but tax property records show the owners name spelled as “Jeane” Mast. The value of the land is reported as 1.4 million but the mansion in its current decay is only valued at $2450. While some research states the house has 10 upstairs bedrooms, tax records report seven bedrooms and one full bathroom.

I can’t help but think what a stunning house this must have been in its glory days. Locals report that this was the first brick house built in Fairfield County Ohio back in 1919. Such a shame to let it rot and decay. Unfortunately a mysterious fire damaged much of the first floor back in 2003.

The funny thing is this isn’t even the real “Mudhouse.” The real Fairfield County “Mudhouse” was torn down in the 1970’s and was a house literally made of mud and wood. This Mudhouse Mansion got its name because of the road it sits on and its proximity to the original Mudhouse. Apparently the two urban legends got merged into one. When the last owner to live it in the Mudhouse Mansion died, the house was left exactly how it was when she died with the furniture and all of her personal items intact. People that have dared to enter the Mudhouse Mansion report that there is still furniture, books, and old checks from the 1930’s sitting in the house.

I have been told that many people have tried to purchase the Mudhouse Mansion over the years. From Halloween haunted house franchises to private people wanting to rehab the mansion and return it to it’s former glory. All have been met with a resounding no from the owner who is now reportedly in her 80’s.

No matter which legend you believe in – all reports agree that Jeane Mast is serious about keeping haunted house seekers and trespassers off her property. Mast will prosecute anyone found on the Mudhouse Mansion property and pays guards to patrol the house, driveway and adjoining land.
