Haunted in Georgia – Local Folklore and Legends from 7 Counties in the State of Georgia

Dressing Rooms, Ice Makers

Do you believe in ghosts? I guarantee you many southerners do! These are the haunted stories of seven towns in the hot, sultry state of Georgia.

Bartow County, Adairsville, Georgia

At Barnsley Gardens in Adairsville, many have claimed to see the apparition in the Adair house. The girls have been said to turn lights on and off in the attic at night. Employees at the home have left toys in the attic for the young spirit and in the morning the toys are always found to have been moved. Also, another apparition that has been spotted is believed to be a Mr. Godfrey Barnsley. Mr. Barnsley spirit is reported to roam the cottages at night. Mr. Barnsley is apparently a former owner of the property and has decided to make it his eternal resting place.

Cobb County, Acworth, Georgia

Throughout the Hickory Grove Subdivision, strange occurrences happen quite frequently and most who live there will tell you the place is haunted. Many residents have reported the sounds of a small child running down their hallways in the middle of the night but, when these sounds are investigated, no one is there. Many have claimed to be awakened in the middle of the night by the sounds of doors being slammed and have even felt the vibrations from these banging doors but, no person in the house could’ve been responsible. Some have even claimed to hear their kitchen chairs being moved or their ice makers being used in the night but no one was in the kitchen at the time. And, maybe the most disturbing claims made by this community are that frightened children have claimed to see “people” in the room that are not visible by their adult parents.

Fulton County, Atlanta, Georgia

At the Shakespeare Tavern, several ghosts are said to roam the dressing rooms, stage and other parts of the building. One actor, while in his dressing room, claimed that a young boy in a velvet suit, walked up to his dressing table where and then simply vanished. Many have reported seeing odd lights in the place, as well as, strange noises and split-second images that made you question whether they had actually been there or not. Occasionally someone will spot a shadowy figure floating along the catwalk. Some have seen the apparition of an older gentleman roaming about. And, many female actresses have complained of items being upset or broken in their dressing rooms.

Greene County, Greensboro, Georgia

At the Early Hill Bed and Breakfast, formerly a plantation home, the apparition of a young girl has been seen swinging on a swing under an old tree. The girl was said to have been the daughter of the late Mayor John Brown and she died under that same tree when one of the branches broke. This girl has also been spotted in mirrors, as well as, her mother’s apparition.

The ghost of an old woman has been seen in one of the rocking chairs on the front veranda but she disappears as soon as you start up the steps toward her.

In the basement of this old building, chains have been heard rattling and the sound is believed to come from the spirits of slaves who were kept down there.

Jackson County, Braselton, Georgia

The Braselton Town Hall is said to be haunted by a young male spirit, affectionately nick-named “Little John.” Little John was allegedly a child to one of the Braselton’s and apparently he had some metal handicaps. Little John is said to have loved dogs and would often pick up strays. He spent most of his time in the attic with his puppy pals until he passed away at a young age; cause unknown.

Today, employees say that items are often moved when they come into work the next morning. Also, locked desk drawers have been discovered unlocked and left open. During the day, many have claimed to hear odd knocking sounds coming from the attic, closets and windows. Also, one of the local police canines once refused to enter the conference room downstairs and began to whine and back away from the doorway.

Pulaski County, Hawkinsville, Georgia

During the Civil War, a maid and her son were killed in the Sinyard house and are thought to be responsible for the hauntings that go on there today. After the home was remodeled, these two specters began making their presence known in some of the oddest ways. Some have heard the baby cry or heard his mother singing to him. Others have heard bodiless footsteps going up or down the stairs, followed by the strong scent of perfume. Kitchen cabinets have been known to open and toss items out onto the floor! Showers curtains have suddenly been jerked open on poor unsuspecting persons. Clothing has been picked up off of the floor and folded! And, what I think is the most bizarre; a man who was working on a ladder outside, was suddenly and forcefully pulled to safety, just before the ladder collapsed! Many have claimed to see the female apparition standing at the windows as they drove by the house. This doesn’t sound like your run-of-the-mill spirit, she actually sounds quite helpful and kind.

White County, Cleveland, Georgia

In the Pig Valley Cemetery (yes, I just said PIG VALLEY), many visitors have claimed to hear bodiless voices on the air. Many have said someone whispered in their ear but when they turned, no one was there! Also, several visitors have heard footsteps and seen movement at the edge of the woods that could not be explained. Many others have felt pure terror upon entering the cemetery and could not physically explain why.

So, I ask you again, do you believe in ghosts?
