5 Top Michigan Microbrews

Michigan has a fantastic amount of quality beer breweries. Each year the microbreweries in state become more and more sophisticated and unique and each year the world finds another darling Michigan microbrew to love.

Below are 5 unique and special Michigan microbrews, with links to their websites for purchase, enjoy!

Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock from the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company in Warren, Michigan which has been making some quality beers for awhile now. The Raspberry Eisbock is a shocker, and something not meant to be drunk quickly or to have too many of. At 13.5% alcohol this very thick, raspberry chocolate delight of a beer is very smooth and well balanced not too sweet for this type of beer. On a cold day the alcohol and strong malt flavors will surely warm you up in a hurry.

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) – from the Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This American Double / Imperial Stout is a perfect example of what an American Double Stout is all about, super dark almost black in color, nice inch of creamy caramel head, with scents of bourbon, oak, vanilla, and chocolate. The taste is dead on smooth, full flavor; bourbon hits instantly but rides out with the combination of all the other flavors, very pleasing. Super strong though and another sipper in my book, this stout won’t disappoint you.

Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout – from the Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They did it again with this killer breakfast stout, which is another American Double Stout. The smell is pure heaven, roasted coffee and chocolate scents that lead to a very well balanced and smooth taste explosion of chocolate with some sweetness from the oatmeal, which has some of the roasted coffee taste in the end notes along with bitter hops, very complex and interesting.

Bell’s HopSlam Ale – from the Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan this American Double IPA is fantastic. Both strong in alcohol and strong in drink ability which makes this a dangerous beer, be forewarned. The color of this beer is a great rich honey with an orange hue to it, and pours with a nice thick head that fades slowly. The taste of citrus, especially grapefruit hits immediately with hints of pine and a solid caramel malt backing. Lots of hops in this beer but not as many as the name would indicate, overall a solid beer from one of Michigan’s best microbreweries.

Oro De Calabaza – from the Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Dexter, Michigan. This fantastic Biere de Garde ale is a fantastic refreshing beverage on a hot summer’s day. This beer is a beautiful yellow golden ale with a nice head that remains throughout drinking, scents of sour lemons and apples and farmhouse funk. This beer is like a really sophisticated sparkling white wine, with tastes of sour citrus upfront that fade to a nice yeasty sweet oak finish that is extremely dry, very drinkable.
