2008 NFL Mock Draft: Top 5 Picks

2008 NFL Mock Draft: Top 5 Picks – Super Bowl XLII is almost here and that means another NFL season is about to come to an end. Pretty soon April will be here and that means another installment of the NFL Draft. We do know that Miami owns the first pick, but what happens after that is anyone’s guess. 2008 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-5:

1. Miami Dolphins

Glenn Dorsey, DT, Lousiana State

Glenn Dorsey is certainly one of the top prospects in this draft and the Dolphins would be hard pressed to skip him. Dorsey will be able to anchor the front defensive line and he looks to be a can’t miss prospect. Miami might look at UVA’s Chris Long here, but I can’t see them looking past Dorsey. Having Ronnie Brown almost certainly rules out a Darren McFadden pick.

Dorsey was certainly the MVP of the college football season. LSU played much better when he was at 100% health. He was such a dominant force on the inside, forcing teams to double and triple-team him, opening up holes for everyone else. Miami will get a real player if they take him with the first overall pick.

2. St. Louis Rams

Chris Long, DE, Virginia

Chris Long looks to be another sure-fire NFL prospect and he will probably come off the board right behind Dorsey. The Rams look to have answers at quarterback and runningback, so McFadden or any of the big 3 QBs are probably not for them. The Rams could use some help on the offensive line, but with Chris Long available I see them taking the biggest impact player that helps them improve. Jake Long from Michigan is also a big possibility here since the Rams offensive line has seen better days.

No matter what the pick, the Rams have a chance to add a great player to the mix for many, many years to come in this slot.

3. Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

The Falcons will most certainly be looking for their quarterback of the future here since Michael Vick will be a little detained for a few years. With that said it will probably come down to which of the top two quarterbacks the Falcons will choose. If Petrino was still in Atlanta I think Brian Brohm would the pick right here, but do you really think that Atlanta will want to trust their team to someone from the University of Louisville again?

Ryan showed his ability to lead a team in BC’s impressive season and Brohm tanked with his Louisville team when Petrino wasn’t running the show. Atlanta could also take a look at Andre Woodson here, but I see Matt Ryan as the pick as of now. The Falcons could also take Jake Long here since their offensive line needs some serious help, but if they do not select a quarterback they could be out of luck since there aren’t many good NFL prospects in the later rounds.

4. Oakland Raiders

Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

There are several other moves that the Raiders can make here that would benefit their team more, but it is very much like the Raiders to take the biggest name player on the board. McFadden is seen by many to be a sure-thing NFL star and he would take some pressure off of JaMarcus Russell. He is also a versatile back and could really help out the offense with his pass-catching ability.

It has been a while since the Raiders have had a great running back and even though Justin Fargas looked to have a breakout year, his injury concerns could have the Raiders looking to trade him and take McFadden.

The Raiders could really use a great offensive lineman and Jake Long will probably be tempting here and they could also use a great defensive tackle and Sedrick Ellis and Vernon Gholston could also be possibilities in this slot. Also, don’t rule out a trade with another team that is dead set on getting McFadden on their roster.

5. Kansas City Chiefs

Jake Long, OT, Michigan

The Chiefs offensive line was atrocious this year and the Chiefs will definitely look to get some O-Line help with this pick. If Jake Long is still available with this pick than he will definitely be the pick. Long has blocked for some good runningbacks in Michigan and he looks to be NFL ready right now.

Sam Baker out of USC and Ryan Clady from Boise State would be possibilities here if Long is off the board.

Recap:

1. Miami Dolphins – Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
2. Saint Louis Rams – Chris Long, DE, Virginia
3. Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
4. Oakland Raiders – Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
5. Kansas City Chiefs – Jake Long, OT, Michigan
